STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- A four-game winning streak came to an end for the Robert Morris University women's lacrosse team Friday afternoon, as the Colonials absorbed a 17-7 defeat to Wagner in both teams' Northeast Conference opener. Senior Sophia Eureka scored a pair of goals two minutes apart to give RMU (7-3, 0-1 NEC) a 2-1 lead early, but the rest of the soggy afternoon at Hameline Field belonged to the Seahawks, who have now won seven in a row to improve to 8-2. After Colonials senior Shannon Lynch converted on a roll to the goal to cut the deficit to 4-3 with 17 1/2 minutes left in the first half, Wagner scored the next five goals, building a 9-3 advantage at intermission. RMU leading scorer Mackenzie Gandy raised her point total to 40 with two goals in the second half, bookending tallies by sophomore Kelley Flynn and junior Meghan Crouse. Melanie Gandy recorded the Colonials' lone assist, lifting her team-best total to 16. But the Seahawks kept the attack up through all 60 minutes to win for the ninth time in their past 10 matchups with the Colonials. Wagner's leading goal-getter Madeline Sims deposited six on the afternoon, while Stephanie Falcony and Kasey Dorney accounted for three goals each. "Just didn't play to our level today," head coach Katrina Silva said. The 17 goals allowed is a season high for RMU, which had conceded more than 10 just once in nine previous games. Silva's group matched a program record with seven non-conference wins, most recently downing Drexel in Philadelphia last weekend. Draw controls were a particular trouble spot for the Colonials on Friday; Wagner led 21-3 in that category. Otherwise, both sides turned it over 22 times, so the extra possessions the Seahawks generated off the draw proved to be decisive. Colonials junior goalie Katelyn Miller faced 24 shots on target, stopping 11 of them before freshman Jamie Keller took over for the final 10 minutes. Wagner outshot RMU 43-19 overall, including a 10-3 edge in free-position attempts. The Colonials will have a chance for a rebound before returning to Moon Township, as they'll travel to face Mount St. Mary's (9-2, 1-0 NEC) on Sunday. First draw from Emmitsburg, Md., is scheduled for noon.
