Emmitsburg, Md. (April 13, 2019) – The Mount St. Mary's women's lacrosse team knocked off defending Northeast Conference (NEC) Champion Wagner by an 11-9 margin on Saturday to collect its eighth straight victory, which marks the team's longest win streak since the 2004 season. The Mountaineers improved to 11-2 overall and 3-0 in conference play with the win, as they sit in a tie atop the league standings with Bryant. The Mount's 11-2 mark is the best record through 13 games in program history. Wagner, which entered the contest on its own eight-game win streak, dropped to 9-3 overall and 2-1 in the NEC following its first loss since February 19. Jordan Groover paced Mount St. Mary's on the day with a team-high four points on two goals and a pair of assists, to go along with a team-best six draw controls. Alayna Pagnotta (3g) and Jordan Butler (1g, 2a) added three points apiece, and Beanie Colson (2g) and Carly Miller (1g, 1a) each tallied two. Jillian Petito made 11 saves and picked up five ground balls to earn her 11th victory of the season in goal. The 11-save effort was Petito's fifth straight game with double-digit saves. Petito made multiple point blank stops on the Seahawks in the victory, and held Wagner to a 5-of-15 (.333) clip on free-position shots. For Wagner, Madeline Seims led the way with six goals and one assist, as she tallied five of her six scores on free-position attempts. Kasey Dorner (2g) and Stefani Peluso (1g, 1a) also finished with multi-point games. Goalie Kelsey Fee stopped six shots between the pipes for the Seahawks. The Mount St. Mary's defense stifled Wagner early in the contest, holding the Seahawks off the board for the opening 16 minutes of play while building a 5-0 lead in the process. Emily Davis got the Mount's first goal of the game at the 26:21 mark, and Pagnotta followed with three straight, including two off feeds from Groover, to push the team's lead to 4-0 with 16:47 on the clock. Kate Kinsella scored the next goal to make it a 5-0 Mount St. Mary's advantage at the midway mark of the half. Wagner finally broke through for its first goal of the tilt at the 13:26 mark as Dorney found the back of the net off a pass from Stephanie Falcone. Seims scored two of the final three goals of the half to cut the Wagner deficit to 6-3 at the break. After a score from Miller to open the second half, Wagner rattled off three straight to pull within just one, 7-6, at the 23:15 mark. The Mountaineers answered with three consecutive goals of their own, including the final two from Colson, to push the advantage back to 10-6 with just under 20 minutes remaining in the tilt. After a scoreless stretch of over eight minutes, Seims scored back-to-back free-position goals to trim the Mount lead to 10-8 with 10:23 left. Just over two minutes later, Groover stretched the lead back to three on her second goal of the game. The Mountaineers held Wagner to just one goal for the remainder of the contest as they closed out the 11-9 win. The Mount begins a two-game road swing with a matchup at Central Connecticut on Thursday, April 18 at 4 p.m.
