BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech had an opportunity to end a long streak against North Carolina Wednesday afternoon and hung tough for the first 12 minutes or so where the game was tied, but couldn't sustain the effort as the Hokies feel to the No. 4 Heels 19-5 at Thompson Field. The loss moves Virginia Tech to 8-5 on the season snapping a four-game winning streak. The Hokies are 1-2 in conference play. Emma Harden scored Tech's first goal after going down 2-0 quickly within two minutes to settle the group down. Then after Emma Crooks won the draw she and Paige Petty played a give-and-go that led to Crooks' goal just 10 seconds later to tie the game. Crooks would double up at 18:43 to tie the game once again, the last time that the Hokies would be able to do that. Carolina went on a six-goal scoring run to end the period and headed into the locker room up 9-3. Julia Bolte scored the first goal of the second frame before the Heels reeled off five straight again. The Tar Heels were led by seven points (5 goals, 2 assists) from Jamie Ortega and eight points (4 goals and 4 assists) from Katie Hoeg. In goal, Taylor Moreno made 15 saves. Inside the box score Tech, one of the nation's best on the clear, converted 12 of 13 opportunities. The Hokies committed just five totals turnovers Wednesday, the fewest of the season. Draw controls were nearly even, with the Heels winning 13 to Tech's 12. Junior attacked Taylor Caskey recorded two points with an assist and a goal Wednesday. Her career tally now stands at 98. Game Notes The Hokies began the final stretch of the season where they will play against a ranked ACC squad in each of the final five contests. With the result, Tech remains winless (0-28) against North Carolina. They remain the only league school that head coach John Sung has not registered a victory against in his three seasons at the helm. What's next The Hokies do not compete this weekend as they gear up for a road trip to Syracuse on Wednesday, April 3 and a clash at Notre Dame on April 7. During the historic 2018 season, the Hokies defeated both teams on route to a 5-2 league finish.
