After trailing 13-8 in the second half, the Brown women's lacrosse team rattled off six-straight goals including the game winner from junior Caroline Zaffino (Darien, Conn.) to knock off No. 23 Cornell, 14-13, on Saturday at Stevenson-Pincince Field. The victory marks the Bears' first over the Big Red since 1999, which was also a one-goal decision (12-11). Brown improves to 8-4 overall and picked up its first win in Ivy League play to move to 1-3 while Cornell now stands at 6-5 on the year and 2-2 in conference action. Senior Carolyn Paletta (Greenwich, Conn.) led the Bears in goals with four tallies on the afternoon while facing off against her two sisters on Cornell. Sophomore Emma DeGennaro (Huntington, N.Y.) also had a solid game with a career-high four assists while adding one goal. In net, senior Mikaela Karlsson (Framingham, Mass.) entered midway through the second half and added a spark, stopping all five shots she faced in the contest. Brown opened the game with two-straight goals, both scored by a pair of freshman in Risa Mosenthal (Campton, N.H.) (29:09) and Maggie Fowler (Bethesda, Md.) (27:13). Senior Emma Dahle (Wynnewood, Pa.) split up two free-position tallies from Cornell and Paletta put in her first of the day at 18:15 for a 4-2 lead. Paletta's sister Grace tied the contest 4-4 with two straight at 17:18 and 16:42 and C. Paletta countered to put the Bears back on top with the next score at 13:50. Mosenthal converted a free-position goal for a two goal (6-4) Brown advantage. It looked like the Bears would carry a two goal cushion into the break but the Big Red netted goals at 2:07 and with time expiring to tie things at six. Shots were even at 12-12 for the first period while Brown held a 9-3 lead in draw controls for the half. Cornell took its first lead of the day at 28:42 to open the second and added two more to build its lead to 9-6. Fowler (24:36) and Paletta (23:29) helped the Bears pull within two with back-to-back goals but the Big Red would then take a 13-8 lead at 18:37 with four unanswered scores. Junior Zoe Verni (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) started the comeback for the Bears at 16:59 and Paletta added her fourth goal quickly after at 16:51 to give Brown momentum. DeGennaro helped chip away at Cornell's lead and made it 13-11 at 12:54 on a free-position score. Zaffino put in her first of the afternoon at 7:55 and Verni tied it up (13-13) at 3:35. The Bears won the ensuing draw control and called a timeout at 3:15 to draw up a play. Zaffino then scored the go-ahead goal at 2:18 with the feed coming from Mosenthal. Cornell had a chance to tie the game by winning the draw control but the Bears blocked a shot and later forced a shot clock violation to take the victory. Brown had a slight edge in shots for the second at 15-14 but still held a commanding lead in draw controls at 10-6. Zaffino won 10 draw controls on the day - trying her career high - giving her 70 for the year which is a Brown record for a single season. The Bears finished with six saves in the stanza, five coming from Karlsson in her 18:37 of play, while Cornell turned away just three shots. Junior Olivia Lee (Bethesda, Md.) and freshman Mason Warble (Bronxville, N.Y.) both paced the defense with two caused turnovers apiece. With her two goals today, Mosenthal moves into fourth place all-time for singles season goals scored at Brown with 44, passing Mercedes Boesch '78 who had 43 in 1978. Cornell was led by Taylor Reed who scored four goals while Grace Paletta added three scores and an assist. The Bears next hit the road for back-to-back Ivy League contests at Harvard on Saturday, April 14 and at Columbia on Saturday, April 21. Both games are set to start at 1:00 p.m. and will be broadcast on the Ivy League Network.
