After a close first half, Harvard opened the second half with five-straight goals to help guide the Crimson to a 17-14 win over the Brown women's lacrosse team on Saturday at Harvard Stadium. Junior Caroline Zaffino (Darien, Conn.) led the Bears (8-5, 1-4 Ivy League) in scoring on the day with three goals and one assist while five different Bears recorded two goals apiece. Harvard (5-8, 1-4 Ivy League) generated the game's first goal at 22:55 with Nicole Baiocco registering the tally before Brown went on a three-goal run. Junior Hafsa Moinuddin (Cheshire, Conn.) gave the Bears the first two scores at 22:05 and 21:24 while freshman Mason Warble (Bronxville, N.Y.) added the third goal at 19:54. The Crimson then responded with four straight to claim a 5-3 advantage with two of the goals coming from the Ivy League leading scorer Julia Glynn. Warble netted her second of the afternoon at 6:29 on a free-position shot to pull the Bears within one but Hannah Keating gave Harvard a two-goal lead with her score at 5:39 to go into the break with a 6-4 lead. Harvard outshot Brown 16-9 in the first and had a 7-2 lead in draw controls. After a combined 10 goals scored in the opening period, 21 were recorded in the second. Freshman Risa Mosenthal (Campton, N.H.) opened the half with her 45th of the year to pull Brown within one (6-5) but Harvard rattled off five unanswered goals to jump out to a 11-5 differential with 10 minutes gone in the stanza. The Bears wouldn't go away and were able to get within three (12-9) with three straight of their own, coming from Zaffino (17:38), senior Carolyn Paletta (Greenwich, Conn.) (15:09, free position) and junior Zoe Verni (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) (13:34, man-down). Tessa Queri and Glynn gave the Crimson a 14-9 advantage before Verni scored her second of the contest at 5:02. Harvard then pushed its lead up to six when Keeley MacAfee and Queri notched scores at 3:40 and 2:52, respectively, to give the Crimson control of the contest. Zaffino (2:27) and Fowler (2:11) added a score before Glynn added her fifth (1:10) and Paletta and Mosenthal followed to close out the game's scoring for a final of 17-14, Harvard. The Crimson held a 21-19 edge in shots for the second while the Bears had the draw control advantage at 9-5. Brown had the game's only free-position shots, going 1-for-1 in each half. With her two goals today, Mosenthal moves into a tie with Kerri Whitaker '96 for goals scored in a single season at Brown with 46. The rookie also moves into eighth place for points in a season (46-7-53). In addition to Mosenthal, Moinuddin, Warble, Paletta and Verni also netted two goals.
