The Brown women's lacrosse team closed out the 2018 season by upsetting No. 21/15 Dartmouth, 17-13, on Saturday at Stevenson-Pincince Field. The Bears gained a 10-7 lead by halftime and increased their advantage to as many as seven (14-7) in the second half while halting a Dartmouth surge towards the end for the victory. Brown ends the year with a 9-6 overall record and a 2-5 mark in conference action while Dartmouth moves to 11-4 with the defeat and 5-2 in the Ivy League. Freshman Risa Mosenthal (Campton, N.H.) led all scorers with six points on four goals and two assists. It's the 12 time this season the rookie has registered a hat trick as she finishes the year with 55 goals, second best all-time at Brown for a season. She also moved into third for points in a season with 64 (55G, 9A). A total of seven Bears recorded points on the day, all of them contributing multi-point efforts. In addition to Mosenthal, sophomore Emma DeGennaro (Huntington, N.Y.) (3G, 1A) and junior Hafsa Moinuddin (Cheshire, Conn.) (3G) tallied hat tricks. Senior Carolyn Paletta (Greenwich, Conn.) added two goals and an assist on Senior Day while junior Caroline Zaffino (Darien, Conn.) (2G, 1A), freshman Maggie Fowler (Bethesda, Md.) (2G, 1A) and junior Zoe Verni (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) (1G, 1A) closed out the scoring. Senior Mikaela Karlsson (Framingham, Mass.) had a strong game for the defense, turning away 10 shots in goal, which included holding Dartmouth to just 3-of-10 on free-position shots. Senior Marissa Hudgins (Syracuse, N.Y.) also recorded team-highs in caused turnovers (4) and ground balls (3). The contest opened as a high scoring affair as seven combined goals were scored in the first nine minutes where the Bears held a 4-3 advantage at 21:27 on a free-position tally from DeGennaro. Verni and Fowler followed with a free-position goal each to double up Dartmouth, 6-3, at 17:20. Moinuddin next added two straight before the Big Green stopped the Bears' six goal run at 12:17 with a score from Sophia Turchetta. Both teams traded two free-position goals with Mosenthal recording both of Brown's for a 10-6 lead at the break. The Bears outshot the Big Green at a 15-13 clip while Dartmouth had the draw control advantage at 10-8 in the opening period. Karlsson finished the stanza with six saves, three coming off of free-position shots to hold the Big Green 2-of-5, while the Bears were a perfect 7-for-7. Mosenthal started the second with her third of the day at 26:58 on a free-position shot while Ellie Carson scored Dartmouth's first goal of the half at 25:54, also on a free position. Brown next grew its lead to the largest of the day at 14-7 with a three-goal spurt with Zaffino starting the run at 22:54 and Paletta putting in two scores (18:37 and 16:47). The Big Green tried to climb back with a pair of scores at 15:31 and 13:38 but the Bears were able to hold them at bay. Mosenthal put Brown back on the board at 10:35 for a 15-9 lead. Dartmouth pulled within five at 10:03 but Moinuddin added a big score at 8:36 to bring the Bears' advantage back up to six. The Big Green scored two-straight but it was too late as Fowler closed out Brown's scoring at 3:25 while Dartmouth's Kierra Sweeney added the game's final goal at 0:55 for a 17-13 conclusion. Dartmouth held the lead in both shots (14-11) and draw controls (9-6) for the second. Brown was again perfect in the period on free-positions (1-for-1) while the Big Green were just 1-for-5. Sweeney ended the contest as Dartmouth's leading scorer with four goals while Carson contributed three goals and a helper. Kiera Vrindten made five stops in the visitor net. For the Bears, Hudgins concludes her impressive career second all-time in career caused turnovers with 79 and 10th in draw controls with 88. In just two years at Brown, Paletta ties for sixth all-time in draw controls with 93. Zaffino ends her first year with the Bears with 82 draw controls, a single season high at Brown, with it also placing her 10th for a career in just one season of play at College Hill. At the conclusion of the contest, Brown honored its eight seniors: Hannah Langmuir (Providence, R.I.), Bri Irons (Wallingford, Pa.), Hudgins, Rose Mangiarotti (Locust Valley, N.Y.), Emma Dahle (Wynnewood, Pa.), Karlsson, Paletta and Madison White (Alexandria, Va.).
