A day later but certainly not a dollar short, the No. 19 Towson University women's lacrosse team used a big scoring to top visiting Georgetown 21-13 Sunday afternoon at Johnny Unitas ® Stadium. After fast and heavy snows fell over Towson yesterday evening, coupled with a pair of quick power outages, officials decided to restart the Saturday contest as a 0-0 game on Sunday. Towson was leading the Hoyas 9-3 with 14:16 left to play in Saturday's game before it was postponed. Towson (1-1) senior midfielder Emily Gillingham finished with a game-high eight points thanks to seven goals and one assist. Carly Tellekamp and Kaitlin Thornton joined in the hat trick club, with the latter added three assists to her day. Georgetown (1-1) was led by four goals from Taylor Gebhardt. Michaela Bruno (1g, 3a) and Emily Ehle (1g, 3a) also had four-point afternoons. How it Happened The first 15 minutes of the game were tight as Towson grabbed a 3-2 lead. Gillingham scored Towson's first two goals, with Annie Sachs adding the third. Taylor Gebhardt bookended Gillingham's second and Sachs' tally to make it 3-2 with 17:55 to play in the first. Back-to-back Tiger goals game Towson some breathing room as Gabby Cha notched her first of the day, followed 90 seconds later by Gillingham's third at 15:02. Bruno tallied a Hoya goal at 14:33 to cut the Tiger lead to two at 5-3. Tellekamp redoubled the lead at 13:26 of the first, but the Hoyas got back within two as Ehle scored unassisted at 10:13. Towson scored four of the game's next five goals, getting back-to-back goals from Thornton and Kaitlyn Montalbano at 8:00 and 6:35, respectively. Gebhardt broke up the run, but Cha and Sachs finished the half with goals on Thornton assists as the Tigers assumed a 10-5 halftime advantage. Cha and Gillingham came out firing after the break as the former scored just 35 seconds into the fresh half, followed by Gillingham again at 28:04. The Hoyas snapped a four-goal Tiger run at 27:53 on a goal from Natalia Lunch, making it 12-6. Both sides traded goals through the middle of the second half, with Towson getting strikes from Gillingham, Tellekamp and Sulmonte. The Hoyas got goals from Bruno and Morgan Ryan between the Tellekamp and Sulmonte strikes. Montalbano and Thornton scored back-to-back three minutes apart, putting the Tigers up 17-9 with half the frame still to play. Hannah Seibel logged a goal at 11:24 before Thornton got her final goal of the afternoon on a Sulmonte feed, putting the Tigers up 18-10. Over the final 10 minutes of the contest, each side scored three times. Gebhardt tallied her final goal of the afternoon at 9:09, followed by three straight Tiger goals. Tellekamp scored between a pair of Gillingham tallies. Gillingham's final goal gave Towson a 21-11 lead. The running clock was short lived however as Georgetown scored with 41 seconds to play, making it 21-12 followed by a Seibel goal at 16 seconds to finalize the scoring at 21-13 in favor of Towson. Behind the Numbers Towson out-shot the Hoyas 34-28, including 18-11 in the first 30 minutes. Towson was highly effective in the second half, scoring on 11 of its 16 total shots over the final 30 minutes. Both sides scored on half of their free position chances, with Towson going 5-for-10 while Georgetown scored on three of its six chances. Towson got 10 saves from starting keeper Kiley Keating before she was spelled by Rachel Florek for the final 41 seconds of the game. Georgetown also split time in goal, with Halle Chomo turning aside five shots in her 36 minutes of work while Micheline Dinardo made a pair of saves over the final 24 minutes. Gillingham's eight points were the most by a Tiger since Samantha Brookhart did likewise last season against Stetson in a 21-5 victory. Gillingham's seven strikes were the most by a Tiger since Nikki Marcinik dropped seven against Drexel on April 12, 2009 in a 17-12 win. Sulmonte was effective in the circle as she pulled down a school and Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) record 14 draws. The Tigers finished the day with 35 points thanks to 21 goals and 14 assists. Towson needed just 34 total shots to score those 21 goals. Of Towson's 34 shots, 28 were on cage. Up Next for Towson Towson continues its season-opening home stand next weekend when it hosts Michigan. Opening draw is set for 4 p.m. at Johnny Unitas ® Stadium following a men's lacrosse game against Georgetown, which begins at noon. Towson and Michigan will be meeting for the first time in program history.
