The University of Michigan women's lacrosse team faced the nation's 10th-ranked team for the second time in four days (No. 10 Navy, Feb. 25), falling at No. 10 Towson, 14-7, on Wednesday (Feb. 28) inside Johnny Unitas Stadium. Sophomore Chandler Kirby paced Michigan's offense with three goals, marking her second hat trick in the last three games. Defensively, junior Madison Richardson recorded a career-high six ground balls, which ties the mark sophomore Sydney Whitaker tallied in the last game at Navy (Feb. 25) for second all-time at Michigan. In the circle, sophomore Molly Garrett and freshman Maggie Kane each grabbed three draw controls. Kane, who recorded a hat trick in U-M's last game, posted the first goal of the game, unassisted, just 47 seconds in. Towson then responded with two goals in a span of just nine seconds to take a 2-1 lead at the 25:10 mark. Graduate student Bianca Brueckner drew a free-position shot and scored to tie the game at 2 with 24:20 on the clock. Brueckner remains perfect this season on free-position attempts, going 3-for-3. The Tigers closed the first half on a 3-0 run, which was started by consecutive goals from Olivia Conti, to take a 5-2 lead into the halftime locker room. Towson carried its momentum into the second half, scoring the first four goals to take a 9-2 lead with 20:51 remaining in the game. The Wolverines then got their offense going as junior Adriana Pendino scored a right-handed laser at the 19:16 mark and Kirby followed up with a man-up free-position goal at 14:02 to make it 9-4, Tigers. Following a pair of Towson goals, Pendino and Kirby scored back-to-back goals again, but the Tigers led, 11-6, with 4:21 left in the game. under two minutes to play, Towson scored three goals in a span of 26 seconds to increase its lead. Kirby completed her second career hat trick with 28 seconds on the clock to make the final score 14-7, Towson. The Wolverines will return home to host top-ranked Stony Brook on Monday (March 5) at 4:30 p.m. inside U-M Lacrosse Stadium. It will mark Michigan's third straight contest against top-10 opponents.
