PHILADELPHIA - Despite scoring three of the second half's four goals, Temple lacrosse (3-7) came up short in its comeback attempt against visiting Jacksonville (5-2) and lost 7-5. It was the Owls' last game before starting its American Athletic Conference slate next Saturday, March 30 against #16 Florida.
Keys to the Game
> The Owls took 18 shots on goal to Jacksonville's 15, but the Dolphins' goalkeeper Dayna Martinetto came up with 13 saves.
> Both teams got seven draw controls and the Owls had the edge in ball handling with 18 turnovers to Jacksonville's 24 on a very windy day at Howarth Field.
> Temple trailed 5-1 midway through the first half and 6-2 at halftime. The Owls scored the final two goals of the game but couldn't close the gap.
Individual Highlights
> Junior Olivia Thompson and sophomore Bridget Whitaker each scored two goals to lead the Owls. Whitaker also led Temple with four caused turnovers.
> Junior Maddie Gebert got one goal and sophomore Jen Rodzewich recorded one assist.
> In goal, junior Maryn Lowell made eight saves for the Owls.
> Junior Kara Nakrasius tallied three of Temple's seven draw controls and freshman Wynston Archer got two.
Game Summary
> Temple answered Jacksonville's early goal, but the Dolphins then scored four straight in an eight-minute stretch.
> Thompson's first goal broke Jacksonville's run at 12:38, but the Dolphins got one more goal in the half for a 6-2 lead.
> Whitaker opened the scoring in the second half with a free position goal at 23:53.
> After nearly 10 scoreless minutes, the Dolphins took a 7-3 lead at 14:24.
> Gebert scored at 12:11, and Archer collected the ensuing draw which led to Thompson's second goal, assisted by Rodzewich.
> The final goal put the Owls within two, but they could get no closer. With 38 seconds left, a free position shot by Whitaker was saved by Martinetto who tallied three saves in the last eight minutes.
Quotable - Head Coach Bonnie Rosen
> "We're really disappointed to walk away with this loss. I think we've been practicing hard and been executing at a pretty high level in practice. Jacksonville did a really nice job early on with their zones and offensively we either weren't getting our shots off or weren't finishing them, and their goalkeeper did a really nice job which put a lot of pressure on us initially...Overall it's finishing our shots on offense. To be held to that few amount of goals, you can't expect to win a game like that."
