BALTIMORE - Junior Taylor VanThof scored the game-winning goal in triple overtime to get the No. 16 Loyola University Maryland women's lacrosse team a wild 14-13 win over crosstown rival and 10th-ranked Towson in the Greyhounds' home opener at Ridley Athletic Complex Wednesday night. Freshman goalkeeper Kaitlyn Larsson stepped into the cage at halftime and stopped nine second-half shots to spark an 8-2 come-from-behind run that helped the Greyhounds (2-2 overall) erase a six-goal halftime deficit and even the score at 13-13 with 58 seconds remaining, forcing overtime for a third-straight game. Larsson then turned back three shots in the overtime periods to keep the Greyhounds in the game, before junior Kristen Yanchoris caused a turnover to send the ball Loyola's way. Junior Hannah Powers capitalized on the opportunity and found VanThof streaking through the middle of the crease for the game-winning strike at the 4:15 mark. VanThof and freshman Livy Rosenzweig led the Greyhounds with their second-straight hat tricks, scoring four goals each, while Powers added two goals and two assists. Junior Frankie Kamely added two goals, senior Katrina Geiger had one goal and two assists, and freshman Sam Fiedler added one goal. For Towson (3-1), Emily Gillingham and Kaitlyn Montalbano had three goals each. VanThof answered the Tigers' first goal of the game, putting away a pass from Powers at the 25:15 mark. The Tigers rattled off three more after that though, pulling ahead 4-1, before goals from Fielder and Rosenzweig got the Greyhounds back within one, 4-3, at the 19:54 mark. Towson wouldn't let Loyola pull even though, as it responded with four-straight goals by the 10-minute mark to earn an 8-3 advantage. Geiger netted a free position goal at 6:50 and Kamely then answered the Tigers' goal with a free position goal of her own at 4:45, but Towson closed out the half with a pair of goals to take an 11-5 lead into the halftime break. Powers sparked Loyola's comeback with the first goal of the half at the 27:15 mark. Geiger then found Rosenzweig for a strike at 26:24, before the two teams traded free position goals at 24:44 (Towson) and 23:58 (Kamely for Loyola) to move the score to 12-8 in favor of the visitors. The Tigers stretched their lead back to five, 13-8, at 21:17, but Loyola closed out regulation with five-straight goals to force overtime for its third-straight contest. Rosenzweig's free position goal started the streak, followed by a pair of goals from VanThof and another strike from Rosenzweig. Powers' 8-meter goal with 58 seconds to go knotted the game for the first time since the first five minutes of the contest. Geiger led the Greyhounds with three draw controls, while junior Lindsey Ehrhardt had two ground balls and three caused turnovers. In goal, Larsson finished with 12 saves and two goals allowed, while junior Kady Glynn earned four saves. Loyola will remain home for a second-straight game on Saturday when it hosts No. 14 Princeton at noon.
