Behind a career-high seven goals from senior Nicole Barretta, Temple lacrosse (2-0) ran away with an 18-7 win in its first road game of the year at Monmouth (0-2). The Owls led by seven at halftime, and continued to extend their lead in the second half. Keys to the Game > The Owls earned the first seven draw controls to help them take a commanding lead with a 6-0 run, and finished with a 15-12 edge in draws. > Temple matched its 18 goals scored vs. Monmouth a year ago, but unlike last year's 16 goals allowed, the defense came up big all game long. > An impressive nine different players scored for the Owls despite Barretta's dominant performance on attack. Individual Highlights > Barretta, the reigning BIG EAST Attacker of the Week after her four-goal, four-assist total in Temple's win over Rutgers, scored six of her seven goals in just the first half. > Senior Nicole Latgis collected a career-high eight draw controls while also tying sophomore Maddie Gebert for game-high honors in ground balls with four. > Latgis, Gebert and sophomore Julia Ryan each tallied a team-best two caused turnovers, with Gebert and Ryan adding a goal apiece (first career goal for Ryan). > Junior Amber Lambeth and sophomores Meghan Hoffman and Olivia Thompson scored two goals apiece, with Thompson adding two assists. > Freshman Jackie Cerchio scored her first career goal, with sophomore Michelle Koscinski and senior Toni Yuko also scoring one goal each. > Sophomore Kara Nakrasius picked up four draw controls while also recording a pair of ground balls and a caused turnover. First Half > Monmouth scored the first and third goals of the game, but Temple quickly answered each time. > The Owls' second goal, scored by Lambeth, started a 6-0 run. > Barretta scored three in a row and four of five to close out the run, giving Temple a 7-2 lead less than 14 minutes into the game. > The Hawks got some momentum going with back-to-back goals at 15:49 and 13:54, but the Owls then held them scoreless the rest of the way. > Thompson scored Temple's ninth goal at 12:37, but nearly 10 minutes followed without a goal. > Barretta put two more on the board in the final three minutes, including her sixth goal of the game with just four seconds left before the break, and the Owls took an 11-4 lead into halftime. Second Half > Lambeth and Cerchio both scored in the opening two minutes for a 13-4 lead. > Monmouth scored just three goals in the half, and never two in a row. > Thompson set up Yuko with 13:57 left for the Owls' first double-digit lead at 16-6, and they went on to lead by 11 twice. Quotable > "This is awesome. Some of the other seniors and I were actually just talking about when was the last time we had a 10-goal win and a running clock, and it's an awesome feeling to come out and do that so early in the season...I think it's just my confidence and having confidence in my teammates (on scoring so many goals). Practicing every day, going out there and working hard and I think it's really helping." - Senior Nicole Barretta > "This was a great day. I'm really happy again with our approach to the game. You could see it in our warm-up and how we started out. We're still working through some of those early-game nerves but we're staying composed. As expected, people are stepping up. Obviously Nicole (Barretta) did a great job putting a ton of goals in the cage, but there were a lot of big moments on the field with ground balls and caused turnovers. Nicole Latgis had quite the day on defense. All-around, it was a really great performance and I think we made some gains from our last game which was the other piece of it. So we're really happy with the result and happy with our growth." - Head coach Bonnie Rosen
