Twelve different players scored at least one goal on the offensive end and sophomore goalkeeper Asa Goldstock made 11 saves on the defensive end to lead No. 7/7 Syracuse to a 23-11 win against Connecticut, 23-11, on Friday, Feb. 9. The game was the season opener for both teams. "I thought in the first half we showed a little bit of the rust from not having a full fall ball and getting all of those scrimmages in," said Syracuse head coach Gary Gait. "At halftime, I went in and said 'that was fall ball and I hope you enjoyed it, not let's go play the 2018 season.' I think the team responded well and got it done on the field. (They) stepped up and really dominated the second half." HOW IT WAS DECIDED Connecticut scored the final goal of the first half with 56 seconds on the clock to cut Syracuse's lead to 9-8. Sophomore Emily Hawryschuk started the scoring after intermission with her second of four goals 1:29 into the second half. That goal sparked the Orange on a 7-0 scoring run, which gave them control of the game. Hawryschuk had three goals during the run. The Huskies briefly halted Syracuse's offensive outburst with back-to-back goals to cut the deficit to six, but that was as close as they could get. OF NOTE Six Syracuse players recorded three or more points in the victory. Senior Alie Jimerson had five points (1g, 4a), as did junior Nicole Levy (3g, 2a). In addition, junior Neena Merola and sophomore Vanessa Costantino each scored a career-high three goals, while junior Julie Cross recorded career-best eight draw controls. The Orange improved their all-time record to 16-5 in season openers, including an 11-0 mark under the direction of Coach Gait. UP NEXT… Syracuse goes on the road for the first time in 2018 when it travels to Portland to face Oregon on Sunday, Feb. 18 at 4 p.m. Eastern time.
