Sophomore Emily Hawryschuk and freshman Sam Swart scored three goals each to lead the No. 8/8 Syracuse women's lacrosse team in its 18-11 setback to No. 2/5 Maryland on Sunday, March 11. The game was played in front of 1,590 fans, which is the fourth-largest Carrier Dome crowd in program history. HOW IT WAS DECIDED It took nearly eight minutes for either team to score to start the game. Syracuse (4-2) recorded the first goal of the contest when freshman Sam Swart found the back of the net on an assist from fellow frosh Molly Carter at the 22:05 mark, but Maryland tallied three straight goals to take the lead for good. After junior Nicole Levy scored on a hard shot to cut the deficit to one, the Terrapins responded with three unanswered goals to take a 6-2 advantage. The squads traded goals for the remainder of the half and Maryland led, 8-4, at intermission. The Terrapins (5-1) opened the second half with three consecutive goals to extend their lead to 11-4 with 26:31 on the clock. Back-to-back goals by Swart and Carter brought the Orange (4-2) within five, 11-6, but that was as close as Syracuse could get. After Maryland took its largest lead of the game at 16-6, Syracuse scored three consecutive goals to cut the deficit to 16-9, but Kali Hartshorn halted the Orange's scoring run as the Terrapins went on to the seven-goal victory. OF NOTE Swart posted her third straight hat trick and now has 10 goals in her last three games and 14 this season. Hawryschuk has recorded multiple goals in five of six games in 2018 and leads the team in goals (18) and points (19). Caroline Steele led Maryland with five goals. Sophomore Kerry Defliese recorded a career-high five draw controls, but it was Maryland that dominated in the draw circle as it won 22-of-30 draw controls.
