No. 7/9 Syracuse (6-2) rolled past Cornell (5-2), 14-7, on Tuesday afternoon at Schoellkopf Field for its second-straight win. The Orange were led by sophomore Emily Hawryschuk who tied her career high with six points on five goals and one assist. Senior Riley Donahue became the ninth player in program history to amass 200 career points with her second goal of the game. She ranks ninth on Syracuse's all-time career points list and in all-time goals and is eighth in career assists. HOW IT WAS DECIDED 'Cuse took a quick 2-0 lead backed by goals from Molly Carter and Donahue but the Big Red quickly evened things up by the 26th minute for a 2-2 game. The two exchanged goals once more for a 3-3 tie with just over 20 minutes to play in the first half. A 5-0 scoring run by the Orange over the course of nine minutes gave Syracuse an 8-3 lead with 7:35 remaining in the half. Cornell's Caroline Allen and Ida Farinholt scored the final two goals of the frame as 'Cuse took an 8-5 lead into halftime. It was an offensive stalemate to start the second half with neither team finding the back of the net for the first 14 and a half minutes. Sam Swart broke the ice with her second goal of the game at 16:33 for a 9-5 Orange lead. Hawryschuk secured her sixth hat trick of the season with a free-position goal at 13:01. The Orange continued to pull ahead from the Big Red with four more unanswered goals for a 14-6 lead with under five minutes left in regulation. Cornell's Allen tallied back-to-back goals in 40 seconds to cut Syracuse's lead to seven with three and a half minutes to play but the Big Red was unable to muscle a comeback as the Orange earned their second-straight win, 14-7. GAIT'S THOUGHTS "These are must wins," head coach Gary Gait said. "You've got to be focused and you've got to be ready to play. We play a lot of games throughout the season -- five games in 14 days, 12 days. You've got to take care of business when you can. When you've got an opponent like Cornell, that typically plays us tough here, you've got to execute and I thought we did pretty well." OF NOTE Hawryschuk tied her career-high in goals (5) and points (6) which she previously set against Virginia Tech in 2017. She tallied a hat trick for the third-straight game and sixth time this season. Syracuse goalkeeper Asa Goldstock tied her career-high in saves with 16 and allowed just five goals against in 54 minutes in goal. Nicole Levy had her fourth hat trick of the season with three goals and one assist for four points. The Orange improve to 17-5 all-time against the Big Red and 7-5 in games played in Ithaca. UP NEXT… Syracuse hits the road for a two-game road swing this weekend against Notre Dame and Northwestern. The Orange first face the Irish in an Atlantic Coast Conference matchup on Saturday, March 24, at 1 p.m. in South Bend, Ind.
