No. 2 Stony Brook women's lacrosse won its third-straight contest over a nationally-ranked opponent to begin the 2018 season on Sunday afternoon, topping No. 20 Denver by the final score of 16-3 in the Seawolves' home opener at LaValle Stadium. Redshirt senior Courtney Murphy (Shirley, N.Y.) led all scorers, tallying six goals and one assist for seven points in the win. Senior Kylie Ohlmiller (Islip, N.Y.) added six points of her own (four goals, two assists), helping the Seawolves improve to 3-0. QUOTING HEAD COACH Joe Spallina "Today was another statement win for us. That's a very good Denver team, they're going to win a lot of games this year. For the most part, I thought our team came into today's game really focused. We had a good week of preparation, and a couple of really good practices leading into today and we were just dialed in. On team defense: "I loved the way we played defensively. We spoke about playing more of a complete game. For me, we're passing the eye test. We're at our best when we're making stops on defense, and transitioning the ball into our attack." HIGHLIGHTS Stony Brook scored a season-high 16 goals, as nine Seawolves recorded a point in the win. The Seawolves outshot Denver 30-14, registering 15 shots in each half of action. Stony Brook's defense forced 17 Denver turnovers, and Anna Tesoriero (Huntington, N.Y.) made five saves while allowing just three goals in the victory. Courtney Murphy (Shirley, N.Y.) tallied six goals in total for the Seawolves, scoring three times in each half. Kylie Ohlmiller (Islip, N.Y.) scored twice in each half. Taryn Ohlmiller (Islip, N.Y.) registered a goal and four assists for five total points, giving her 17 points over the first three contests of the season. Keri McCarthy (Hauppauge, N.Y.) scored her first two goals of the season, adding one assist for three points. Tiffany Zullo (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) recorded a multi-point game of her own, recording one goal and one assist. Ally Kennedy (North Babylon, N.Y.) and Rayna Sabella (Mount Sinai, N.Y.) each added a goal in the win. Samantha DiSalvo (Lynbrook, N.Y.) had a team-best five draw controls.
