The University of Michigan women's lacrosse team was overwhelmed by the nation's top team, falling to No. 1 Stony Brook, 16-3, on Monday (March 5) inside U-M Lacrosse Stadium.
Freshman Caitlin Muir recorded the first multi-goal game of her career, leading the Wolverines with two goals.
Stony Brook tallied the first goal of the game, but Michigan came right back, as Muir received a pass in transition from junior defender Gabby Burns and scored at 21:42. It marked Burns' first career point in maize and blue. The Wolverines took a 2-1 lead when junior Grace Hemmer converted a free-position shot with 18:36 to go in the first half.
Stony Brook then rattled off nine goals in the final 18 minutes of the half to take a 10-2 lead at the break.
The Seawolves scored the first six goals of the second half to push their lead to 16-2 with 10:25 remaining in the game. Both teams hit a dry spell until Muir tallied her second goal of the day on an assist from sophomore Nadine Stewart with 1:41 on the clock to produce the final score of 16-3.
Junior Mira Shane made her first start of the season in goal and finished the day with 10 saves. Sophomore defender Quinn Melidona picked up a career-high four ground balls to lead U-M in that category and added one caused turnover.
The Wolverines will remain in the state of Michigan for their next matchup, traveling to Central Michigan on Sunday for a 1 p.m. game at the CMU Lacrosse Complex.
