No. 1 ranked Stony Brook ran past the University of Hartford women's lacrosse team on Thursday evening, as the Seawolves defeated the Hawks, 21-3, on Al-Marzook Field at Alumni Stadium. Courtney Murphy scored five goals and tacked on two assists for the Seawolves to lead all scorers with seven points.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The second-ranked offensive team in the nation got off to a quick start, scoring five goals within the first seven minutes to take an early 5-0 advantage. Ally Kennedy scored each of her two goals during that stretch.
The Seawolves continued to go to work in the remainder of the opening half, extending the lead to 15-0 before the halftime break.
The rally extended into the second half, as Stony Brook scored five more times to push the lead to 20-0 with 12:42 remaining.
Hartford ended Stony Brook's run with 9:35 left to play, as Debbie Phillips found the back of the net for her ninth goal of the year. That marker ignited a game-ending 3-1 run for the Hawks.
The freshman struck again 21 seconds later before junior Billy McLaughlin extended the Hawks' run to three with her 11th tally of the year at the 6:22 mark before Erica Shea ended the rally with a goal in the minute.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE & NOTES:
Murphy's third goal of the game with 21:50 remaining pushed her career total to 290, a new NCAA Division I record.
Phillips recorded her second multi-goal outing of the season for Hartford.
Freshman Kaitlyn D'Andrea won four draw controls to pace the Hawks, while Keri McCarthy came away with a game-best nine for Stony Brook.
Cassidy Hock, a freshman, registered six saves in net for Hartford. Anna Tesoriero, Stony Brook's starting goalie, made two saves in 20:43 before Jessica Goralski took over in relief.
Stony Brook, which went 12-of-12 on clears, held the advantage in shots (31-7), ground balls (26-13) and draw controls (16-9).
NEXT ON TAP:
The turnaround is a quick one for Hartford, as the Hawks head to UMass Lowell on Saturday. First draw between the Hawks and River Hawks is set for 1 p.m. from Cushing Field.
