The LIU Brooklyn women's lacrosse team won its second straight game on LIU Field Tuesday afternoon, beating Lafayette, 14-9. The Blackbirds, who will now head into the Northeast Conference portion of their schedule, were led by five goals from junior Bianca Santucci. The Blackbirds (3-7) used a first half scoring spree to take the edge over their Patriot League opponents (5-7), started off by Santucci. The junior scored in the first 50 seconds off the game, off a pass from her sister Adriana Santucci, to put LIU on the board, 1-0. Lafayette answered less than 12 seconds later to tie it up, but just under five minutes into the game, freshman Isabelle Peng scored an unassisted goal to give the Blackbirds the lead, and they would not trail again. Over the next four minutes, LIU scored three more unassisted goals, from Santucci, Amanda Masullo and Peng again, going up 5=1. Though the Leopards would score twice to cut the gap to 5-3, LIU ended the first half on a six goal scoring spree. Masullo would assist on the next two goals, finding Santucci and freshman Kaylee Riggins to make it 7-3. Then it was Rachel Masullo's turn, as she scored three straight goals to widen LIU's lead to 10-3. And Bianca Santucci would close out the half with a goal in the final second, giving the Blackbirds an 11-3 lead at the halftime break. Scoring was not as strong for LIU in the second half, and Lafayette would find the back of the net six times to start to mound a comeback, but they never got closer than four goals. Sophomore Sam Kidd was clutch in the net, making 14 saves to keep LIU on top. Both Masullos and Santucci would score once more in the second half, which was just enough to keep Lafayette at arm's length, as LIU took the win, 14-9. Bianca Santucci was LIU's leading point scorer, with five goals and an assist, while Rachel Masullo had four goals and one assists. Amanda Masullo finished with two goals and two assists, while freshman Isabelle Peng added two goals. Freshman Kaylee Riggins had a goal and a team-high four draw controls. Up next, the Blackbirds open Northeast Conference action on the road, heading north to take on CCSU, Friday, April 5, and Bryant, Sunday, April 7.
