In a game played within a one-goal margin for more than 45 minutes, two runs late in the second half were the difference as the Lafayette women's lacrosse team couldn't hang on to a late advantage as Lehigh took the 2019 edition of The Rivalry by a 16-14 score on Wednesday evening at Fisher Stadium. Four straight tallies from the Maroon and White over a four-minute stretch into the final 10 minutes of the game gave Lafayette its largest lead at 13-10. But Lehigh answered with five straight of its own to take a 15-13 edge with 3:19 to play. A feed from sophomore Anna Stein to freshman Olivia Cunningham pulled the Leopards back within one at 2:24, but Lehigh's Mary Ellen Carron iced it with a score at the 22-second mark. The loss drops the Leopards to 5-10 overall this season and 1-6 in conference play, while Lehigh improves to 6-8 and 2-5 in conference action. Senior Jane Kirby was a force offensively with five goals on seven shots for the Maroon and White and Cunningham added three scores for her second hat trick of the year. Rookie Caroline Curnal registered a dominant performance in the circle as Lafayette held a 24-8 edge in draw controls with nine going to Curnal and seven won by sophomore Colleen Bannon. Sophomore Quinn Lacy made eight saves between the pipes in her 10th defeat. Samantha Sagi on the other side stopped eight shots as well with 14 goals allowed for her sixth win of the season. Lafayette led the way in shots, 34-27, but Lehigh won the ground-ball battle, 19-17, and forced the Leopards into 15 turnovers, committing just five of their own. The Mountain Hawks converted on all five of their free-position opportunities, while Lafayette went 3-of-6 from the eight-meter arc. The Leopards hit the road this weekend for their next Patriot League test, traveling to Annapolis, Maryland for a meeting with No. 14 Navy on Saturday at 1 p.m.
