BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Tied 6-6 late in the first half, the Lehigh women's lacrosse team scored nine of the game's final 10 goals to pull away for a 15-7 win over UMBC on Saturday afternoon. Junior Sondra Dickey led the offense with a career-high six goals as five different Mountain Hawks posted multiple goals. Lehigh improves to 2-2 on the season, heading into a quick turnaround on Tuesday, at home vs. Columbia. "I thought Sondra had a tremendous game," said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. "She gets recognized for her points, but including the turnovers that she created, she had a pretty complete game today." Along with Dickey's offense, she added an assist for seven points. She also had three groundballs, three draw controls and three caused turnovers. Sophomore Hannah Cermack recorded five points for a second straight week, this time via her first-career hat trick along with two assists. Senior Courtney Henig tallied two goals and four assists while senior Kellie Gough and freshman Nora Giordano each scored twice. "Our offense came away with more points each possession in the second half, so whenever you're more successful on your possessions down there, we were playing less defense and that always separates you," said Redfern. UMBC scored less than two minutes in, but Lehigh responded with two straight – from Giordano and Cermack – to open a 2-1 lead with 23:53 left in the first half. The Mountain Hawks would never trail, with their margin reaching as much as 4-2 in the first half following a Gough goal with 18:57 remaining. The Retrievers scored two straight late in the half to pull even at six, but Dickey answered with her third of the game at the 2:58 mark to give Lehigh a 7-6 halftime advantage. Dickey continued the success in the second, finishing a natural hat trick with her third straight goal just over four minutes into the half. Eventually, Lehigh's run reached 6-0 following a Henig goal with 21:46 on the clock gave the Mountain Hawks a 12-6 edge. UMBC scored at the 17:19 mark, but the Mountain Hawks responded with the final three goals of the game – from Dickey, Cermack and Giordano – to wrap up the 15-7 win. Final shots were 24-18 in favor of Lehigh while the Mountain Hawks held a 15-9 edge in groundballs. Draw controls were even at 12. Sophomore goalkeeper Samantha Sagi made six saves while freshman Kerry McHugh made one. "We're getting a little more experience on the defensive end," said Redfern. "We changed our defense a little bit today. It was a little more aggressive. I believe that just gave people confidence; we got some really nice caused turnovers and groundballs coming out of that end." The Mountain Hawks will quickly return to action on Tuesday when they host Columbia at 3 p.m. on the Patriot League Network.
