FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield University Women's Lacrosse limited Manhattan to two goals over the final 47 minutes on Wednesday afternoon on Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium and Taylor Mitchell paced the attack with five goals – notching her 100th career point in the process – as the Stags picked up a 14-6 victory. Brooke Gallagher also tallied five points with two goals and three assists. With their fourth straight win, the Stags move to 8-3 overall and 3-0 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). Fairfield is tied with 3-0 Monmouth (9-3 overall) atop the league standings, while Manhattan falls from the ranks of the conference unbeatens at 8-4 on the year with a 3-1 MAAC tally. Mitchell's five goals – which tied her career best established in the season-opening win at Holy Cross – bring her total to 101 career points. She is the 22nd Stag to reach the century mark and, with 96 goals on the ledger, is four short of becoming the 12th player in program history to reach 100 career tallies. Mitchell leads the Stags this season with 27 goals. Gallagher continued her torrid pace, moving her totals to 25 goals to along with her team-leading marks of 20 assists and 45 points. The effort was her sixth outing with five or more points this season. Kelly Horning, Kathleen Hulseman and Jillian Winwood each added two goals, and Meaghan Graham potted one to round out the scoring. Fairfield also got two assists from Diana DeVita and one apiece out of Horning and Kelly Gordon. Doing their part to keep Fairfield on the attack, Horning and Maggie Reynolds each hauled in five draw controls and Nicollette LaVista picked up three. In total, the Stags held a 15-7 advantage on the restart, including a 10-1 margin in the second half. Reynolds also paced a strong defensive effort with three caused turnovers and three ground balls on the back line. The starting backline of Reynolds, Megan Beach, Erin Mammele, Caroline Mangan and Kennedy Slater was instrumental in pressuring the Jaspers into 20 turnovers. The Stags also limited Manhattan's top three point scorers – Molly Fitzpatrick, Grace Lipponer and Cassidy Burns – to a combined total of two goals and one assist. In the cage, Olivia Conquest went the distance and made seven saves to notch her eighth win. She is only the fifth Stag to earn eight or more wins in her first season of action protecting the Fairfield goal. A 3-0 scoring spurt by Manhattan represented the game's first run as it staked the Jaspers to a 4-2 lead at the 17:53 mark of the first half. However, the Stags then kept Manhattan off the board for the ensuing 33:32 of clock time – building an 8-4 lead before the next Jaspers' goal. In total, Manhattan managed only two goals over the final 47:53 of the game with Fairfield matching its highest offensive output of the spring to run away with the 14-6 win. Manhattan's offense was led by a hat trick from Caitlin Murphy. Nikki Prestiano made 11 saves for the Jaspers. Up next, the Stags return to the site of their 2018 MAAC Championship win on Saturday, April 6 when they meet host Marist in Poughkeepsie at 1 p.m. The Red Foxes defeated winless Canisius, 19-14, on Wednesday to improve to 5-7 overall and 2-2 on the conference ledger. Action is back on Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium next Wednesday, April 10, as the Stags host Monmouth at 3 p.m. live on ESPN3.
