Red Storm Lacrosse Wins Overtime Thriller Over Vermont, 8-7<br /> <br /> Lagodich scores OT game-winner after Manes ties game in final minute.<br /> <br /> <br /> QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's lacrosse team scored a thrilling overtime victory in its second home game of the season, defeating Vermont (1-6, 0-0), 8-7, on Saturday afternoon at DaSilva Memorial Field.<br /> <br /> Trailing by one goal with under a minute to play, the Red Storm (3-3, 0-1) stopped a Catamount clear attempt as Vermont's Chris Maubach threw a high pass out of bounds with thirty-five seconds remaining in regulation. Ten seconds later, senior Tom Manes ripped a shot from the right side to tie the game and send it into overtime.<br /> <br /> After freshman Jordan Rothman pushed the overtime faceoff to senior Reggie Davis, St. John's settled into the offensive restraining box. Freshman Alex Lagodich took a pass from senior Garrett Mitchell and launched a shot from three feet inside the box. The ball found the bottom left corner of the net for the game-winner.<br /> <br /> St. John's jumped out to an early two-goal lead with goals from Mitchell and Lagodich in the middle of the first period. After Vermont's leading points scorer Drew Philie found the goal at the end of the period, the Red Storm responded by scoring three more unanswered goals in the second period.<br /> <br /> Sophomore Harry Kutner scored off an assist from freshman Brandon Ayers at the 9:34 mark followed by two quick goals from classmates Tyler Novotny and Jordan Rothman. Novotny's first goal of his career came off a diving shot coming from behind the goal, while Rothman took the ensuing faceoff and ground ball straight at the goalkeeper and put it home.<br /> <br /> Rothman had a career day at the faceoff X, winning 15-20 attempts for a faceoff percentage of .750.<br /> <br /> Dillon Ayers scored the lone goal for the Red Storm over the next quarters of play as Vermont (1-6, 0-0) reeled off six scores with Rory O'Connor accounting for two. Geoff Worley put the Catamounts up 7-6 with 5:14 remaining in the game, setting up St. John's dramatic comeback.<br /> <br /> As a team, the Red Storm dominated in every statistical category, outshooting Vermont 42-27 with 28 of those shots coming on goal. St. John's forced 24 Vermont turnovers leading to a 35-18 edge in ground balls. The Red Storm only missed one clear opportunity while forcing three failed Catamount clears, including the crucial one in the final minute.<br /> <br /> St. John's moved to an even 3-3 on the season, while improving to a perfect 2-0 record at home. This game marked the first overtime game for St. John's since last season's 12-11 loss to Penn State.<br /> <br /> St. John's continues it home stretch when the team hosts No. 6/6 Hofstra on Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
