WASHINGTON -- In a tightly-contested affair that featured six ties and six lead changes, East Carolina snuck away with a 10-9 win over the GW Lacrosse team in its home opener on Friday afternoon. HOW IT HAPPENED GW got off to a fast start by scoring three goals in the first 3:38 of the game, with two coming from first-year Traci Hampton, but ECU fought back to turn it into a back-and-forth contest. The Pirates scored four of the next five goals to tie it up 4-4, before Aidan Cage found the back of the net with 5:09 remaining in the first half to give the Colonials a one goal advantage at intermission. The Pirates struck first in the second half to tie it up 5-5, but GW answered just over a minute later with a goal from Cage that gave the Colonials what would turn out to be their last lead. ECU struck with back-to-back tallies to take its first lead of the day, 7-6, with 16:34 remaining. The teams would trade the next six goals, with GW tying it up three times in the stretch. It was the Pirates who would score last, however, getting the game-winning goal from Camryn Pennypacker with 2:04 to play. Cage got a shot on goal with 1:24 left that was stopped by Pirates' goalkeeper Christina White, and her last-chance shot with 16 seconds left went wide. NOTEWORTHY • Cage scored a career-high four goals. Her previous best was two against Longwood on Feb. 17, 2018. • In her second collegiate game, Hampton recorded her second hat trick. She also assisted on two to finish with a game-high five points. • GW outshot ECU, 39-23. Cage had a career-high 10 and Hampton took seven. • White was the difference maker, with 19 saves in the net for ECU. UP NEXT The Colonials face Radford for a 2 p.m. draw on Sunday. GW will close out its three-game home stand on Friday, March 1 with a bout against California at 2 p.m.
