The George Washington lacrosse team came out hot on Sunday afternoon, establishing an early lead that it never surrendered to top Radford, 14-9, at the GW Lacrosse Field on the Mount Vernon Campus. The victory marks the Colonials' first of the 2019 season. HOW IT HAPPENED The Colonials were the first to strike with first-year Alana Greene scoring the first goal of her career from the free position. GW went on to score two more, both from sophomore Ioanna Mantzouratos, before Radford was able to find the back of the net for the first time at the 21:03 mark. Mantzouratos added another just a minute later to complete her hat trick, but the Highlanders responded with three of their own to tie it up at four. The Colonials regained their lead with a trio of tallies, while the Highlanders were only able to score one more, to finish the half with the 7-5 advantage. GW continued its momentum in the game's second stanza with Manzouratos scoring her fifth and final goal less than two minutes after the break. The Colonials got a pair from Caitlin Concannon and Maddy O'Brien to bring the squad's lead to 10-5, but Radford answered back with three straight to close the gap to two. The rest was all the Buff and Blue, who saw goals from four different Colonials, while the Highlanders only scored one more to end the day on top with the 14-9 victory. NOTEWORTHY Alana Greene and Catie Perkins made their first career starts in the Buff and Blue. Greene finished the day with one goal, while Perkins registered one assist. Ten different Colonials found the back of the net in today's contest. Besides Mantzouratos, Morgan McDonnell, Aidan Cage, Greene, Caroline Kiernan, Tori Hampton, O'Brien, Katie Quinn, Christine Weber, and Concannon all netted one goal each. Manzouratos paced the squad with a career-high five tallies on the day while also causing one turnover and picking up one ground ball. The Colonials finished the day with a 30-26 advantage in shots and were even with the Highlanders with 14 caused turnovers each. Radford held a 15-11 edge in draw controls and narrow 26-25 advantage in ground balls. On defense, Caroline Esmond led the way with a game-high seven ground balls and three caused turnovers. Cassie Scandalios was also crucial on the back line with five ground balls, a game-high five draw controls, and one caused turnover, while Posie Paoletta contributed to the Colonials' defensive effort with three ground balls and three caused turnovers. In addition to her one goal, McDonnell recorded a game-high three assists against Radford. The junior also picked up one ground ball and caused one turnover. The Colonials finished the day with a 30-26 advantage in shots and were even with the Highlanders with 14 caused turnovers each. Radford held a 15-11 edge in draw controls and narrow 26-25 advantage in ground balls. UP NEXT GW will wrap up its three-game home stand next Friday when it welcomes California to the GW Lacrosse Field on the Mount Vernon Campus for a 2 p.m. draw.
