WASHINGTON – In a tightly-contested affair that featured six ties and two lead changes, Monmouth snuck away with an 11-10 win over the George Washington Lacrosse team to conclude its non-conference slate on Saturday afternoon. HOW IT HAPPENED GW struck first, finding the back of the net just 39 seconds into the game with a goal straight off the draw from first-year Tori Hampton. Monmouth was fast to respond just a minute later, but Hampton added another tally to put GW back in front. The squads continued to go back-and-forth for the next eight minutes, before the Hawks began to pull away at the 22:12 mark with the score knotted at four. The Hawks found the back of the net four more times, while the Colonials added three, to go into the half with an 8-7 advantage. That one goal edge at the break proved to be the difference, as both teams scored three more times in the game's second stanza. With the Colonials down by one (11-10) with 2:40 to play, the Hawks won the crucial draw to gain possession of the ball. The Colonials' defensive unit sprang into action, causing a turnover and taking control of the ball with 40 seconds left on the clock. Junior Caroline Esmond darted down the field and looked to pass the ball to fellow junior Katie Quinn, but the pass went long and out of bounds, giving the Hawks possession for the game's final 17 seconds. Monmouth protected the ball until the horn sounded to come away with the narrow 11-10 victory. NOTEWORTHY • Hampton led GW's offensive effort with four goals, three of which came in the game's first half. Aidan Cage, Christine Weber, Posie Paoletta, Abby Carlin, Caroline Kiernan and Quinn all added one apiece. • Paoletta's goal in the first half marks the first of her career and the first goal by a defender this season. • GW finished the day with a 24-23 edge in ground balls, a 27-26 shots margin, and a 15-8 advantage in caused turnovers, while the visiting Hawks led off the draw (12-11). • Sophomore keeper Jenna Oler played all 60 minutes between the pipes, faced 26 shots and made 10 saves. • On defense, Esmond paced the squad with five ground balls while Kiernan led the team with five caused turnovers. ROAD AHEAD GW will open Atlantic 10 action with back-to-back games on the road. The Colonials will first travel to Philadelphia on Friday, March 22 to face La Salle at 3 p.m. before making the trip to North Carolina to go head-to-head with Davidson on Sunday, March 24 for a 1 p.m. draw.
