On a windy afternoon at the GW Lacrosse Field on the Mount Vernon Campus, the George Washington lacrosse team welcomed the reigning Atlantic 10 Champion Richmond Spiders to the District on Sunday afternoon. Despite going neck-and-neck with the visitors through the first 15 minutes of play, the Spiders were able to pull away with five straight goals at the end of the first half to gain and hold onto the lead and finish the day with a 15-10 victory. HOW IT HAPPENED Richmond got in front early with a strike just three minutes into the game, but GW bounced back with a pair of goals from Aidan Cage and Katie Quinn to get the Colonials on the board. The Spiders responded with a pair of their own before the two squads began to battle back-and-forth to get the score knotted at four with 15:53 to play. Richmond regained the lead at the 14:51 minute mark before adding five straight tallies to establish a 9-4 advantage. GW was able to halt the Spiders in the final five minutes of the half, while adding two strikes, to go into the break down by 9-6. Richmond continued its momentum in the second half with two straight goals before Tori Hampton was able to complete her hat trick at the 23:22 mark and cut Richmond's lead to four. The Spiders continued to press on attack and netted another pair before Abby Carlin was able to find the back of the net with a feed from Kendall Lambert. Richmond answered with another goal, but Carlin responded for the Colonials with back-to-back strikes to complete her hat trick and bring GW back within four. The Buff and Blue defense was able to hold Richmond to just one goal in the final 15 minutes of play, but the Spiders pulled away with the 15-10 victory. NOTEWORTHY • Hampton and Carlin led the squad with three goals each while Morgan McDonnell, Cage, Alana Greene, and Quinn added one each. • McDonnell had a career- and game-high four assists in today's contest. Cage also finished the day with two helpers. • Richmond finished the afternoon with an advantage in ground balls (20-14), shots (43-21) and draw controls (20-8), while the two squads were even with eight caused turnovers apiece. • Sophomore keeper Jenna Oler made a season-high matching 17 saves in 60 minutes against the Spiders. ROAD AHEAD The Colonials will head back out on the road on Friday, April 5 to take on Saint Joseph's at 4:30 p.m. before returning home to host VCU on Sunday, April 7 at 1:00.
