The Mount St. Mary's men's lacrosse team fell to Delaware, 11-8, on Saturday in the 2019 season opener at Waldron Family Stadium. Jack Mangan tallied a team-high three points on a pair of goals and one assist for the Mount, while Chris DiPretoro and Luke Frankeny also netted two goals apiece. Delaware's Charlie Kitchen led all players in the contest with five points (2g, 3a), and Bryce Reid registered a game-high four goals. After Kitchen gave the Blue Hens an early lead in the tilt, Mount St. Mary's rookie Connor McMahon found the back of the net at the 7:24 mark for his first collegiate goal and the team's first score of the season. Joe Eisele converted on a man-up situation for Delaware with just under four minutes left in the first period, and the Blue Hens took a 2-1 advantage into the second. The teams traded a pair of goals apiece through the opening 11 minutes of the second quarter, with Brenden McCarthy and Mangan capitalizing on the Mount's end, before the Blue Hens tallied the final two goals of the half to take a 6-3 lead into the break. The Mountaineers cut the deficit to just a pair midway through the third quarter after consecutive goals from DiPretoro and Mangan, but Delaware answered with three straight in the final 6:14 of the frame to open its largest lead of the contest at 10-5. Frankeny converted two goals in the first seven minutes of the fourth period to get the Mount back within striking distance. The sophomore's second tally was a highlight-reel goal, as he swung around a defender and whipped a one-handed shot from eight yards out past goalie Matt DeLuca. The Blue Hen defense buckled down from there and held the Mountaineers to just one more goal the rest of the way while adding an insurance tally from Reid, as they closed out the 11-8 win. DeLuca earned the win in cage for Delaware with a 13-save performance. Dylan Furnback stopped 12 shots in goal for the Mount. Delaware slightly outshot the Mount by a 43-37 margin, while the Mount held the ground ball advantage, 32-28. The Mountaineers' next action is at home vs. Towson on Friday, February 15 at 3 p.m.
