Senior attacker Rebecca Lane and sophomore attacker Sam McGee scored twice each but the Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse squad fell to #22 Georgetown, 12-9, in the 2019 season opener on Saturday afternoon on Sweeney Field. The game-changing run belonged to the Hoyas when, with the game tied 6-6 just minutes into the second half, Georgetown scored five unanswered goals that spanned over 20 minutes. The Hawks jumped out to an early 4-2 lead midway through the first half, but the Hoyas rattled off four of the final five of the first to jump out to a 6-5 edge by the halftime break; half of those Georgetown goals came in the form of eight meters while senior attacker Francesca Donato scored the opener (29:34) and added an assist to lead the Hawks' offense in the first half. McGee scored on a feed from sophomore midfielder Taylor Newman-Farr to kick off the second-half scoring (28:38), but from there, Georgetown ripped off five in a row to go up 11-6 by the 6:11 mark. The Hawks kept chipping away, scoring three of the game's final four goals; McGee (1:36) and senior attacker Rebecca Lane (1:14) moved SJU to within three of the nationlly-ranked Hoyas, but that 12-9 score would stand as time expired. For the game, Georgetown outshot Saint Joseph's 33-20, including a 16-9 second half, while the Hawks earned a slight 19-17 edge in ground balls for the game. In her first collegiate start, Sarah Platt turned in a team-high four ground balls and three caused turnovers, while sophomore midfielder Bridget Cerciello added three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Junior Veronica Wilson made four saves vs. six goals allowed in the first half of her first collegiate start, while sophomore Corinne Buttner (0-1) put up identical numbers in the second half of play. Saint Joseph's returns to action at #13 Navy next Sunday, February 17. Opening draw control in Annapolis, Md. is set for 1:00 p.m.
