The No. 22 Georgetown University women's lacrosse team (2-0) outlasted the Towson Tigers (0-2) on Saturday afternoon with a 10-7 victory. The Hoyas pulled ahead of the Tigers for the first time at the 11:47 mark of the first and maintained the lead until Towson tied the match at seven all with 13 minutes remaining in the contest. GU finished the game with three unanswered goals and secured their second win of the 2019 campaign. "We had a really good game plan, there were some mistakes made but overall I'm really happy with how they adapted to what Towson was trying to do," said Georgetown Head Coach Ricky Fried. "In the end, we didn't back down, we didn't worry, we didn't point fingers we just rallied together and depended on each other and kept fighting. The biggest thing I'm proud of with this group so far is the fight that they have and the effort they put out." Senior Taylor Gebhardt (Baldwinsville, N.Y. / C.W. Baker) led the Hoyas with three goals off of four shots, notching her second hat trick in two games, while Francesca Whitehurst (Baltimore, Md. / Roland Park Country School) paced the offense with three assists and a goal of her own for a GU-best four points. Junior Natalia Lynch (Smithtown, N.Y. / Smithtown West) followed Gebhardt with two goals herself and three draw controls while senior Morgan Ryan (Maplewood, N.J. / Oak Knoll School) added to the score sheet with one goal off of a game-high six shots. Six Hoyas netted goals in the matchup with freshman Annabelle Albert (Princeton, N.J. / Lawrenceville School) notching her first career goal. Georgetown outshot Towson 25-21 and forced 17 turnovers while giving up 22 of its own. On the draw, GU pulled in 14 draw controls to Towson's five. Senior goalkeeper Haelle Chomo (Naples, Fla. / Barron Collier) notched eight saves in the contest. Towson opened the scoring 10 minutes in off a shot from Natalie Sulmonte after just three total shots were taken in the first few minutes. Sophomore Caroline Frock (Westminster, Md. / Westminster) notched GU's first goal less than a minute and a half later assisted by junior Michaela Bruno (Garden City, N.Y. / Garden City). With just over 16 minutes remaining in the half, Towson took its final lead of the game, netting their first of two free position goals of the contest and Sulmonte's second goal of the match. The Hoyas pulled ahead and netted three goals within the next three minutes with a goal from Lynch and two from Gebhardt. At the five minute mark, Chomo made back-to-back saves from Towson's Carly Tellekamp to keep the score at 4-2 Georgetown. In a late surge of activity, Towson put away their third of the game from Kaitlin Thornton which was quickly followed up by Ryan to put the Hoyas up 5-3 at half. Towson opened the half once again with a goal in the fifth minute from Thornton. Minutes later, Gebhardt completed her hat trick to give the Hoyas a short-lived two goal lead as the Tigers narrowed the margin less than a minute later. In the 41st minute of the game, Albert put away her shot after junior Emily Ehle's (Baldwinsville, N.Y. / Christian Brothers Academy) initial shot attempt was knocked down by the Tigers' goalkeeper. Towson answered back with a two-goal run and tied the game 7-7 after its second successful free position goal. Georgetown controlled the remaining 12 minutes of the match as Bruno tallied the go-ahead goal off the Hoyas' first free position goal of the match and Whitehurst and Lynch added the insurance in the final five minutes for the 10-7 finish. The Hoyas are back in action on Saturday, Feb. 23 to take on Drexel at Cooper Field. The opening draw is slated for 3 p.m. and live stats as well as a webcast will be available through www.GUHoyas.com.
