Overcoming a two-goal deficit in the fourth quarter, the fifth-ranked Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team battled back and forced overtime, but Colorado College survived in the end to steal a 12-11 victory on a sun-splashed Sunday afternoon at Jennings Family Stadium. Against the Tigers, Will Stockhausen led the Captains with four points, including the game-tying goal with less than two minutes remaining in regulation. Meanwhile, Dylan Rice also deposited a hat-trick, while Brady Altobello had a multi-goal effort as well. On the defensive side, Zac Hanway looked sharp between the pipes. The sophomore came through with a career-high 18 saves, which equaled the eighth-highest single-game total in program history. He also collected three ground balls during a well-rounded effort. With the setback, Christopher Newport falls to 6-3 on the season, while the win bumps Colorado College to 10-2. Despite a short turnaround from yesterday's grueling battle at Salisbury, the Captains came out firing on Sunday. Just over a minute into the game, Jackson Deal snagged a rebound and struck on the doorstep to open the scoring. Later, Alex Brendes circled two defenders and ripped on the run, while Stockhausen shook a defender with a quick cut and snapped his first goal to grab a 3-1 lead. Meanwhile, on the defensive end, Jack Cook absolutely bullied a pair of midfielders along the right sideline to force a failed clear, and Hanway stoned three consecutive shots, including a man-up blast, to keep the two-goal lead. With time winding down in the first quarter, both teams picked up the pace on the offensive side. Rice burst through three defenders before converting his first goal. Later, Miles Collins was tripped on a run towards the cage, but the ball shot out to Robby Adams, who grabbed possession and cracked one from the right side for the fifth goal. Unfortunately, the Tigers matched the Captains shot-for-shot over the final few minutes of the opening quarter while tossing a pair of goals on the board to keep Christopher Newport within striking distance at 5-3. In the second stanza, Colorado College pulled within one after an early goal, but the hosts responded on both ends. First, on a clear attempt, Brendes absolutely destroyed a midfielder with a devastating shot along the left sideline to clamp down on the CC rally. Taking advantage of the extra possession, Stockhausen slipped a feed to Rice, who launched a dart to grab a 6-4 lead. Continuing the surge, Adams secured a loose ball after another failed clear. Although he hit the turf on the play, the second-year star kept control of the ball and flipped it to Drew Miller, who landed a goal from the right side to snatch a 7-4 advantage. Unfortunately, Colorado College mounted a response. Just before halftime, the visitors cut their deficit back down to two. Then, in the third, the squad added three straight goals to grab its first lead of the game at 8-7. Needing to steal back some momentum, Zack Sands won the ensuing faceoff cleanly and pushed the tempo. Eventually, after the Captains worked the ball around the zone, Stockhausen slipped a skip pass to Altobello, who burned a defender before firing the equalizer. With the game knotted at eight, Colorado College responded. Slapping back-to-back goals on the board, the Tigers snuck out to a 10-8 lead early in the fourth quarter. Trading blows, Rice completed his hat-trick off a feed from Deal before the Tigers clapped back just over a minute later to regain a two-goal edge. As time ticked away, Christopher Newport called for a timeout with four minutes left in regulation. Regrouping in the break, the Captains came out on fire. First, Altobello lined a laser from the left side to inch back within one. Shortly thereafter, following another failed clear by the Tigers, Stockhausen landed a huge blow. After securing a pass from Brendes at the top of the zone, the senior shuffled forward before unleashing a scorcher into the top of the cage, which knotted the game at 11. Sadly, Colorado College survived in the end. After Christopher Newport was hit with a penalty in overtime, the Tigers drove home their third man-up goal of the game to steal the marathon victory. Overall, the visitors held a 46-38 advantage in shots, while the Captains led the way in ground balls, 35-24. Christopher Newport also won 14 of the game's 24 faceoffs following a strong showing by Sands at the 'x.' Sands eventually finished the contest with 10 ground balls, while Phoenix Hines had four. The Captains will look to bounce back on Saturday when the team hosts Mary Washington in a Coast-to-Coast Conference clash at 1 p.m.
