LEICESTER, Mass. -- The visiting University of Southern Maine Huskies outscored the Becker College Hawks 6-1 in the third quarter en route to a 13-5 non-conference victory Wednesday afternoon at frigid Alumni Field. Playing their first game since March 6 due to extreme cold weather and a snowstorm eight days ago, the Huskies improved to 2-1 overall with their second straight win. The Hawks remained winless on the season dropping their sixth consecutive game. Leading 5-2 at the halftime intermission, the Huskies exploded for four consecutive goals to increase their lead to 9-2 in the opening six minutes of the third quarter. After a Becker goal, USM scored twice in a 40-second span to make it 11-3 and cruised to the victory. Sophomore Paul Leonardo (Groton, Mass./Groton-Dunstable) opened the third period by scoring a man-up goal 71 seconds into the frame. Junior Sam Hornblower (Portland, Maine/Deering) followed up with a goal less than two minutes later, and senior Keegan Smith (West Gardiner, Maine/Gardiner Area) scored 49 seconds after Hornblower. Rookie Bryce Randall (Portland, Maine/Deering) made it four straight USM goals before the quarter was six minutes old. Senior Daniel Johnson (Plymouth, Mass.) snapped the string of USM goals for Becker with 6:26 to play in the third, but junior Drew Shane (Casco, Maine/Lake Region) and Randall scored 40 seconds apart for the Huskies to make it 11-3. Randall and Hornblower led a well-balanced USM attack with three goals apiece. Shane also picked up three points scoring twice and dishing out one assist, and Leonardo contributed two goals. Junior goalie Zach Bessette (Readfield, Maine/Maranacook) earned his second win of the season playing the first 51:23 allowing three goals and making five saves. Freshman Alex Leblanc (Westbrook, Maine) played the final 8:27 giving up two goals and stopping three shots. Senior Blake Boutiette (Burrillville, R.I.) led the Hawks scoring two goals and passing off one assist for three points. Johnson and junior Avyay Chaganty (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) each had a goal and an assist. Sophomore goalie Michael Krch (Justice, Ill./St. Rita Catholic) took the loss after stopping four shots and surrendering eight goals in the opening 33:34. Rookie Willard McMillen (Grapevine, Texas) came on to make two saves and give up five goals. Southern Maine outshot Backer 36-25, and won the battle of the ground balls 42-32. Bessette and freshman Ryan Marsh (Wells, Maine) led the Huskies with six ground balls apiece, and Hornblower had five ground balls and caused four opponent turnovers. Becker senior Bryan Parsons (Shrewsbury, Mass./Hebron Academy) led all players with seven ground balls.
