FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood lacrosse is peaking at the right time. Extending their win streak to three straight, the Lancers (6-8, 3-1 Big South) continued their second-half resurgence with a dominant win over Big South powerhouse Winthrop, winning both ends of the field to cruise to a 14-4 victory Saturday afternoon at Elizabeth Burger Jackson Field. Now coming off consecutive wins over Radford, Gardner-Webb and Winthrop, the Lancers sit in second place in the Big South behind only No. 24 High Point (4-0). Winthrop (6-9, 3-1 Big South) entered the game winners of five straight and unbeaten in the Big South but had no answer for a surging Longwood team that has now won four of its past five games. Backed by eight saves from freshman goalkeeper Danielle Burke, the Lancers held the Eagles to their lowest scoring output ever in a Big South game and gave up just one goal over the game's final 36 minutes. The win was Longwood's first win over the Eagles since 2014 and snapped a five-game losing streak to a Winthrop (6-9, 3-1 Big South) team that has amassed two Big South Championships and a conference runner-up finish in the past four seasons. "The defense played amazing today," said junior Dana Joss, who scored four goals and added three draw controls, two ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers in her marathon 60-minute effort. "We held them to four goals, and we practiced all week preparing for their drives. Our coaches really prepared us well. Offensively we had a lot of scorers, and putting in 14 goals and 10-goaling them is a great feeling." Joss was one of seven Longwood goal-scorers and helped pound home the nail in Winthtop's coffin with three goals in the second half. Leading scorer Kaitlin Luccarelli added four and Emma Johnson struck twice, while junior Lexi Davis and freshmen Jackie Bewick, Nicole Fordyce and Jade O'Connor also got on the board with one goal apiece. Longwood's 14 goals came on 22 shots, but that offensive effort was just one side of the story. The Lancers were even more dominant on the defensive end, as Burke stuffed eight of the Eagles' 12 shots on goal and the Lancer defense turned away three of their five free-position attempts. Winthrop scored just one goal after halftime and managed to create just four shots over the game's final 21 minutes. "First and foremost, I'm proud of our team, I'm proud of our coaching staff, and I'm just proud of everybody," said Longwood head coach Elaine Jones. "Jenna did a great job working with the goalies and getting them ready. Our offense put it together, our defense put it together, our transition and our draws and everything just worked very well today. That's because we put a lot of effort and time into being prepared." The Lancers' stifling effort began in the midfield circle where junior captain Jordan Howard corralled five of Longwood's 10 draw controls, and it continued in Longwood's arc where the backfield trio of juniors Howard, Corri Calandra and Olivia Zubillaga held Winthrop to just 12 shots on goal and combined for four caused turnovers and four ground balls. Longwood's end-of-season resurgence comes for a Lancer team that entered the year with just one senior, defender Jourdan Jones, who was honored prior to the game for Senior Day and drew her first career start. Jones also came within inches of securing her first career goal when she missed just high in front of the net after stepping up to play attack late in the game. "This was a special day in a lot of ways for our team, especially for Jourdan," Elaine Jones said of her lone senior. "She has been a dedicated member of this program for four years now, and she has been a pleasure to coach. Her commitment to Longwood lacrosse is something that our entire team has benefited from, and you could tell during the ceremony how genuinely loved she is by her teammates." Jones took the first two shots of her career in the game, including a free-position shot, after stepping up to the frontline late in the game for the first time in her career. Beyond Jones' Senior Day swan song, the Longwood underclassmen who once again paved the way, continuing the upward trajectory that helped the Lancers rebound from a 2-7 start to amass a 4-1 record over the past four games. "We've definitely come a long way and improved a lot," Joss said. "The chemistry on our team is amazing; we all get along so well, and that really helps us." Now with just two games remaining in the regular season, the Lancers will make their final push for a top-four spot in the Big South standings and a spot in the four-team Big South Championship tournament. The Lancers' home finale will be against Big South preseason No. 2 Campbell this Wednesday, April 17, at 4 p.m., followed by the final regular season matchup against Presbyterian Saturday, April 20.
