The Winthrop lacrosse team earned a come-from-behind victory Wednesday afternoon, downing the Radford Highlanders 16-14 at Eagle Field.
With the victory, the Eagles improved to 4-1 in the Big South and 7-9 overall. The win also secured Winthrop a spot in the Big South Tournament which only takes the top four teams. Radford fell to 3-10 overall and 2-3 in the conference.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In a back and forth first half, neither side managed more than a two-goal edge. Radford grabbed the first goal of the game and then Winthrop scored four of the next five to go up 4-2. The Highlanders battled back on a 4-0 run to take a 6-4 lead with 8:43 left in the half. The Eagles netted the next three goals, going up 7-6. Radford grabbed the next two goals with Winthrop scoring with just under two minutes to go to reach the 8-8 halftime score.
Nearly eight minutes came off the clock in the second half before either team got on the board. Radford scored four of the first five goals of the second half to go up 12-9 with 16:52 left in the contest. Winthrop pulled within two with just over 15 minutes left and then the Highlanders picked up two quick yellow cards that the Eagles were able to take advantage of.
Winthrop was able to score four goals in less than three minutes while up a player to take a 14-12 lead with 9:27 left in the contest. Radford got back within one with 8:30 remaining but the Eagles gave themselves some breathing room scoring twice more to go up 16-13. The Highlanders were able to net one more goal but didn't have enough time to complete the comeback.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Lauren Morris led the Eagles with six points on two goals and four assists while Mia Creighton and Lauren Asher each tallied five points. Creighton scored five goals with Asher netting four and assisting on one other. Alaina Girani finished the afternoon with nine saves.

Winthrop wraps up the regular season on Saturday with a home contest against the nationally-ranked High Point Panthers. Prior to the contest, the three Eagle seniors will be recognized.
