VILLANOVA, Pa. – The Villanova women's lacrosse team defeated the Siena Saints 12-7 on Saturday, Feb. 23 to grab their second win of the season. The Wildcats now have a two-game win streak at home and are 2-1 on the season. Siena has yet to win a competition this season and is now 0-3. Villanova jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead over Siena within the first three minutes of action. The Wildcats received goals from Carlye Maita and Devin Hassinger, whose goal was assisted by Katie Comerford. The Wildcat's defense held strong and did not allow the Saints to get off a shot for the first eight minutes of the half. By this time, the 'Cats were out shooting their opponent 8-1. Villanova kept firing off shots, but Sammy Horton came up big in the net and saved Villanova's next four shots on goal. Siena grabbed their first goal in the game with 18:19 remaining in the first half to cut the lead down to 2-1. At this point in the game, the playing field leveled out and possession between the two fluctuated for a chunk of the half. Villanova snagged back their two-point lead with 12 minutes remaining when Nicole Concannon set Hassinger up in front of the net for her second goal of the contest. The Wildcats kept their lead until the Saints everlasting pressure finally broke through Villanova's defense. Kaitlyn Dowsett scored to bring the score to 3-2 and within a minute and a half Siena's Mary Soures tied things up at three. With 1:26 remaining in the half, Villanova was resilient to take back the lead and was able to apply heavy pressure on the offensive end. Junior Maggie Jennings cut around a Siena player, leaving her on her knees, to then cut across the front of the goal and score over a group of Saints on the left side. Jenning's goal put the Wildcats up 4-3 headed into halftime. The momentum headed into halftime, rolled over into the start of the second half as the Wildcats wasted no time in padding their lead, scoring a total of eight goals in the second 30 minutes. Grainger Rosati scored the first goal of the frame to give her team a 5-3. Within five minutes of Rosati's goal, Maita also netted her second of the game and at that point extending the lead once more (6-3). Siena answered back with a goal of their own, but the Wildcats went on a five-goal run to counterattack. Ashley Lynch started off the run with a free position goal and freshman Alexa Tsahalis scored her first collegiate goal of her career. Rosati followed with her second goal of the game and then Devon Brown capped off the run with two of her own to set the lead at 11-4. With four minutes left in the game, the two opponents went on to exchange goals until Villanova's lead became 12-6.
