VILLANOVA, Pa. – The Villanova women's lacrosse team suffered a tough overtime loss to Richmond on Saturday afternoon. The Spiders defeated the Wildcats 14-13 in a competition where the tables would not stop turning. The first all-time matchup between the two was surely one for the books. With multiple lead changes, huge plays and an overtime thriller both teams were in for a fight. Villanova once again received strong play from multiple Wildcats. Liz Trojan led the pack with four goals and one assist and Devin Hassinger, Katie Comerford and Ashley Lynch each added two apiece. Hassinger also recorded nine draw controls to break the all-time career record and now sits in the No. 1 spot with 164. She surpassed Shawna Giust who previously held the record with 158 during her 2010-13 stint. To start the contest, Villanova was first on the board with a goal by Comerford. Richmond quickly scored two free-position goals to give them a 2-1 lead with 25:25 on the clock. A few moments later, Villanova scored two back-to-back goals to take a 3-2 lead. The first goal was scored by Lynch assisted by Grainger Rosati and the second was from Hassinger assisted by Comerford. Richmond and the Wildcats exchanged goals once until the Spiders went on a 2-0 run to take a 5-4 lead. As usual, the infamous Trojan-Comerford pair stepped up and evened things up at five after Comerford, the team's assist leader, set Trojan up for her 14th goal this season. The Spiders scored two more goals during the second half and went up 7-5 with eight minutes of play on the clock. Villanova was last to score during the first half and cut the lead to 7-6 headed into the break after Lynch scored on a free-position goal. The last six minutes of the half remained scoreless. Up 7-6 to start the half, Richmond came out of the break and scored two more goals for a 9-6 lead. Ten minutes in Trojan got the 'Cats their first goal of the second frame on another free-position shot to put them within two. The next six goals were exchanged back and forth between both opponents over a span of 10 minutes. Villanova was still down two with six minutes left in regulation until Comerford stuck again and put the 'Cats within one (12-11) with 3:08 on the clock. Richmond called their last timeout of the half up by one with 1:53 remaining. They were able to drain most of the possession clock and get a goal to go by Mia Castagnero. The spiders grabbed a 13-11 lead with 1:03 on the clock. Twenty-eight seconds remaining Jennings drew a foul committed by Brittney Wright. Unable to continue play, McDonough took Jennings place and scored for Villanova on a free-position shot to cut the lead to 13-12. The Wildcats won the draw and was able to get past Richmond's doubled up pressure and with milliseconds left on the clock Brittany Bruno blasted in a buzzer beater to send the game into overtime. Richmond held control for a majority of the overtime frame. The Spiders had the frequent opportunities to secure the win, but Alexa Moro made huge plays for Villanova in the net. Richmond took a free-position shot just 51 seconds in, but it was saved by Moro. At the three-minute mark they fired off another shot, but Moro tallied another save to keep the 'Cats in it. As the Spiders maintained control they continued to run the clock down in hopes Villanova would not be unable to have any last second shots. With the clock winding down, Madison Ostrick drew a foul on the Wildcats and sent one home on a free-position goal to take the game 14-13 and scoring her only goal of the contest. Castagnero and Katie Sciandra led the Spiders each with four goals. Sam Geiersbach added in three more and Marissa Brown added in the other two. Megan Gianforte stood in the goal for the entire game and recorded eight saves on Villanova's 21 shots on goal. In total, Richmond recorded 29 shots, 15 turnovers, 21 ground balls, nine draw controls and six free-position shots. Moro recorded 10 saves on Richmond's 24 shots on goal and now has a total of 87 on the season. As a team, the Wildcats fired off 26 shots, picked up 20 ground balls, won 20 draw controls and took nine free-position shots. Villanova is now 5-4 on the season and will return to action on Tuesday, Mar. 19 at 6 p.m. when they travel to Columbia University in New York, N.Y.
