Behind an 8-0 first-half scoring run, Vanderbilt overpowered Furman to win 18-5 on Sunday afternoon inside Paladin Stadium. The win moves the Commodores to 3-0 on the year, while the loss drops the Paladins to 1-3. Furman was led by Abby Shields with three goals on the day, while Sophie Brennan and Isabelle Walsh each added one. Grace Pollak added two assists and Courtney Baker added 11 saves on the day. Vanderbilt jumped out to a 1-0 lead just over one minute in, before Sophie Brennan picked up her fourth goal of the year to tie the game at one two minutes later. The Commodores then went on an 8-0 scoring run to push the lead to 9-1 with just under five minutes to go in the half, before Abby Shields netted her seventh goal of the year to cut the lead to 9-2 and send the teams to halftime. Vanderbilt opened the second half with a free-position goal to push the lead to 10-2, before Furman got back-to-back goals from Isabelle Walsh and Shields to cut the lead to 10-4 with 20:32 remaining. The Commodores then used a 5-0 scoring run to push the lead to 15-4 and force a Furman timeout with 12:50 remaining. Vanderbilt pushed the lead to 16-4 with just over 10:00 to go, before Shields again cut into the lead, this time with her third goal of the day to make it 16-5 with just under 5:00 remaining. The Commodores finished the game with back-to-back goals to take the 18-5 victory. Furman is back in action next Saturday, traveling to Johns Hopkins for a 1:00 pm matchup.
