BALTIMORE - After trailing by at most five during the game, the UMBC women's lacrosse team looked to mount a comeback against the Temple Owls on Saturday, but ultimately fell 16-12.
STRAIGHT FACTS
Temple opened the game on a two-goal scoring run before Lauren McDonald (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) scored off a bounce pass from Kelsey Weishaar (Sykesville, Md./Century).
The Owls scored twice again, spliced by McDonald's second goal of the game, this time off an assist from Rachel Ridgley (Owings Mills, Md./Franklin) to cut Temple's lead to 4-2.
After the Owls took a 5-2 lead, Zoë Pekins (Columbia, Md./Hammond) put two shots into the back of the net to cut Temple's lead down to 5-4 with 11:49 remaining in the first half.
McDonald scored between another two Temple goals to keep the score at a two-goal deficit before the Owls ended the first half on a four-goal run to make the score 10-5.
Out of halftime, Payton Van Kirk (Ocean City, Md./Stephen Decatur) scored the first goal of the second half off a pass from Ridgley to cut Temple's lead to 10-6.
After the Owls's earned a goal back, Van Kirk and McDonald scored back-to-back goals to bring the deficit back down to three, 11-8.
Temple notched two straight goals before Van Kirk and Grayson Corbett (Ellicott City, Md./Wilde Lake) countered, holding Temple to a 13-10 lead.
The Owls went a three-goal scoring up to extend their lead to 16-10 before Catherine Sims (Elkridge, Md./Howard) and Corbett added the final goals of the game for the Retrievers and of the game.
