BALTIMORE - The UMBC women's lacrosse team fell in its America East opener, 16-5, to the #17 Stony Brook Seawolves on Wednesday afternoon. STRAIGHT FACTS Stony Brook opened the game on a four-goal run before Lauren McDonald (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) and Rachel Ridgley (Owings Mills, Md./Franklin) scored back-to-back off assists from Payton Van Kirk (Ocean City, Md./Stephen Decatur) to cut the Seawolves' lead to 4-2. The Seawolves scored three more before Grayson Corbett (Ellicott City, Md./Wilde Lake) netted a pass from Lily Kennedy (Marriottsville, Md./Marriotts Ridge) with 40 seconds left in the first half to make the score 7-3 at halftime. Out of the break, Stony Brook took a 9-3 lead before McDonald and Van Kirk teamed up again to bring the score to 9-4. The Seawolves scored three goals to extend their lead to 12-4 before McDonald broke it up by scoring on a free position shot. Stony Brook would close out the game on a four-goal run. FOR THE RECORD Stony Brook moves to 3-3 overall and 1-0 in America East play, as UMBC falls to 2-5 on the year and 0-1 in conference contests. BY THE NUMBERS 127 - With her three goals, McDonald has now recorded 127 career goals, tying Debbie Kratsel for eighth place in the record books. 15 - In goal, Carly Tolino (Middletown, Md./Middletown) made 15 saves on the night. 14 - The Retrievers picked up 14 ground balls, with McDonald leading the team with four. 10 - Even though the Seawolves won the draw control battle with 13, the Retrievers kept it close, winning 10. Last season, Stony Brook dominated the draw control battle, winning it 21-10. 3 - McDonald (3g) and Van Kirk (3a) led the Retrievers with three points each; 1 - Ridgley's goal in the first half was the first of her career. UP NEXT The Retrievers close out a three-game homestand on Saturday, March 16 as they welcome the Drexel Dragons. The opening draw is scheduled for 3 p.m. and is part of a doubleheader with the men, who will face Vermont at 12 p.m.
