The Basics
• Score: #18 Johns Hopkins-17, UMBC-7
• Records: JHU (7-2) • UMBC (2-7)
• Location: Baltimore, MD • Homewood Field
• The Short Story: Sophomore Aurora Cordingley tied her career high six points to lead the 18th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team to a 17-7 win over UMBC Tuesday night.
How it Happened
• This one got off to a slow start as it took until the 18:33-mark for either team to get on the board. Junior Lexi Souder opened the scoring when she redirected a pass from senior Nicole DeMase. Cordingley then scored back-to-back goals, just 45 seconds apart, and Hopkins led 3-0 with 16:50 to play in the half.
• Lauren McDonald got the Retrievers on the board at the 15:19-mark, scoring a bouncer from seven yards out. Junior Maggie Schneidereith answered with a transition goal 70 seconds later for the Blue Jays and it was 4-1 Hopkins. Redshirt senior Ellie McNulty caused a turnover on the UMBC clear and sophomore Keegan Barger fed a long pass to Cordingley, who found a wide open Schneidereith on the doorstep.
• Oliva Docal cut the deficit to two with a free position goal at 12:04, but sophomore Shelby Harrison answered with one of her own just 52 seconds later. That sparked a four-goal Blue Jay run that spanned the remainder of the half and gave JHU an 8-2 lead at the break. Schneidereith pushed the lead to four with a no-look, back-hand shot from the right alley. Cordingley and Souder then scored a pair of goals in the final 32 seconds of the half.
• Grayson Corbett scored on a high-to-low shot to open the second-half scoring just 33 seconds in. Harrison and McNulty answered with back-to-back goals and the lead was up to seven at the 22:21-mark. Lily Kennedy got one back for the Retrievers with a one-timer exactly 60 seconds later.
• The Blue Jays responded with four straight goals, from four different players, to push out to a 14-4 lead. Schneidereith drew a double team and then found a cutting Becca Boyle, who fired a shot inside the left post on the run to kick-start the four-goal run. DeMase capped the run with a nifty roll dodge and score from in tight at the 14:51-mark.
• UMBC got three goals in less than three minutes to cut the deficit to seven with 10:29 still to play. But that's as close as the visitors would get as Hopkins closed out the game with three unanswered goals to take the win.
What it Means
• Hopkins improves to 16-13-2 all-time against UMBC and has won seven straight in the series.
• The Blue Jays controlled 19 draws in the game, tied for the seventh most in school Division I history. It is also the most draws in a game since the Jays had a school-record 26 on February 16, 2013.
• Freshman Kylie Kempe and junior Michelle Poirier each scored their first career goals.
