Sophomore goalkeeper Taylor Mathieson tallied 13 saves while senior Taylor Cuenin and junior Amanda Outcalt each provided hat tricks on the attacking end, helping UC Davis assemble a 10-7 win over UMBC in collegiate women's lacrosse action at UMBC Stadium Wednesday afternoon. The Aggies improve to 7-6 for the year. The Retrievers slip to 2-9 overall. Cuenin had two of her three goals in the first 13 minutes of the game, helping UC Davis to an early 3-1 advantage. Outcalt also took part in that start, netting the game's first goal, then added more tallies in the 23rd and 35th minutes of the contest. Junior midfielder Maddie Myers chipped in two goals and an assist, while Mar Alvear and Kate Graham each added another goal. Alvear also had a game-high six draw controls while contributing two steals and four ground balls in the midfield. Mathieson also recorded a career-best five ground balls to go with her 13 stops. For UMBC, Zoë Pekins, Grayson Corbett and Payton Van Kirk scored two goals apiece, while senior goalkeeper Carly Tolino had 11 saves, including three against Aggie free-position attempts. After its initial lead, UMBC rallied back to a 3-3 tie – the first of two equalizers in the game – before Outcalt and Myers responded with back-to-back scores in the 23rd and 28th minutes. Myers' eight-meter goal gave the Aggies a 5-3 edge at the halftime break. Olivia Docal and Corbett came out of the gates with goals for UMBC to start the second half to even the contest at 5-5. However, UC Davis again had an answer: Myers hit another eight-meter goal just two minutes later in the 39th, igniting a 3-0 run that gave the Aggies the lead for good. The UC Davis defensive unit of Ally Deremer, Addie Dearden, Anna Belenis and Natalie Garces also held the Retrievers at bay down the stretch, helping Mathieson post four saves in the final 16:27 of the game. The Aggies outshot their hosts by a 33-26 margin, and won 11 of the game's 19 draws. UMBC put 20 of its 26 shots on frame and committed just 13 turnovers, although three of those miscues led directly to UC Davis goals. This is the second time these two teams have met, with UMBC winning the previous matchup by a 20-7 margin almost exactly two years ago.
