AMHERST, Mass. – Amherst College's Jack Norton '19 scored four goals to help lead the 10th-ranked Purple & White to a non-conference victory over Endicott College Wednesday afternoon at Pratt Field at Lehrman Stadium.
With the win, Amherst improves to 4-2 on the season, while Endicott falls to 0-6 overall. Amherst returns to action Saturday, March 25 when it travels to Hamilton College for a 1 p.m. start.
Amherst got off to a fast start early in the first quarter as Evan Wolf '19 netted back-to-back scores – the first of which was unassisted, while the second came on the man advantage and was assisted by Connor Sheehan '18. Andrew Ford '19 then scored on a feed from Colin Minicus '20 at the 11:48 mark to make it 3-0, before Norton scored his first with 10:27 to play in the first stanza to set the score at 4-0.
Endicott came roaring back as Will Jennings found the back of the net at the 8:05 mark, before Bryan McManus found the netting one minute later to make it 4-2. A third unanswered marker saw Teddy Hannon find Jennings who pulled the Gulls to within one (4-3) with 3:07 on the clock. From there, a score by Amherst's Brogan Mahon '19, assisted by Ford, set the score at 5-3 in favor of the Purple & White after 15 minutes of play.
In the second quarter, Amherst extended its lead to 6-3 when Norton scored a man-up goal on a dish by Minicus with 9:04 remaining in the first half. Endicott again answered with four straight goals as Colin Bannon started the run, while Jennings and Matthew Faucher each added a tally to make it 6-6. Luke Wallahan provided the assist on Jennings's score, while Bannon aided Faucher with four seconds left.
A fourth consecutive goal early in the third quarter gave the Gulls a 7-6 edge as Hayden Souza found pay dirt, but Amherst rallied through Norton who fired in two goals (the second assisted by Chris Albanese '17), while Sheehan capitalized on a sensational feed from Jordan Sanford '19 as time expired to make it 9-7 after 45 minutes of action.
A back-and-forth fourth frame saw Jennings connect with Bannon at the 13:19 mark to make it 9-8, before Evan Wolf (from Ford) and Mahon (from Minicus) struck for back-to-back markers to make it 11-8 with 7:35 to play in the contest. Bannon and Ford then exchanged a pair of late goals to set the score at 12-9 before McManus delivered a beautiful goal with 35 seconds left following a pass from Jennings to set the final score at 12-10.
