BOULDER, Colo. – The No. 4/6 Stony Brook women's lacrosse team came out flying in its season opener against No. 13/14 Colorado, topping the Buffaloes 15-5 on Friday afternoon at Colorado's Indoor Practice Facility. QUOTING HEAD COACH Joe Spallina "I'm really happy for our team. This group has worked hard through the preseason and understands that they have something to prove. With this being our first game, we needed to get off to a quick start and we did that which set the tone for the game. Defensively, we were locked in. Our goalie was world-class and I thought offensively we did some great things. We shift all of our focus to another top-25 team in Denver." HIGHLIGHTS Three total Seawolves earned hat tricks as Siobhan Rafferty (Long Beach, N.Y.), Taryn Ohlmiller (Islip, N.Y.)and Ally Kennedy (North Babylon, N.Y.) all recorded three goals apiece. Along with her three goals, Ohlmiller also notched five assists to lead all players with eight points. Rayna Sabella (Mount Sinai, N.Y.)and Keri McCarthy (Hauppauge, N.Y.) each added in two goals while Sabrina Tabasso (Lower Merion, Pa.) and Sara Moeller (Phoenix, Md.) both put in goals to mark their first scores in a Stony Brook uniform. Anna Tesoriero (Huntington, N.Y.) was a force to be reckoned with between the pipes, making an incredible 14 saves and picking up five ground balls. NOTES Stony Brook ran out to a 7-0 lead to begin the 2019 season, scoring four of those goals within the game's first 10 minutes. Colorado finally got on the board with 1:52 left in the first half, but the Seawolves got the last word before halftime as Ohlmiller scored with 27 seconds left to make it an 8-1 advantage. The Buffaloes rang off four goals in the second half, but Stony Brook responded each time, putting the exclamation point on the victory as Sabella and McCarthy scored within 30 seconds of one another with under two minutes left to play. With the win, the Seawolves are now 12-2 in their last 14 contests vs. ranked opponents. Stony Brook went 9-1 last year against ranked foes. Stony Brook is now a perfect 2-0 all-time against Colorado. NEXT UP The Seawolves continue their Colorado trip to Denver, taking on the No. 13/16 Pioneers on Sunday, Feb. 24. The game is set to begin at noon (ET).
