The No. 10 Stony Brook women's lacrosse team dropped its first home game of the season to Stanford on Sunday afternoon by a score of 12-15 at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium. QUOTING HEAD COACH Joe Spallina "It was great to be back on our home field. We take pride in playing here and do a great job of connecting with our community so they turn out to support our team. To have the opportunity to play in front of our home fans was something that the team was looking forward to. I think they might have been looking forward to it maybe a little too much. We came out and were a little tight and not really as opportunistic as we can be, missing shots that were routine for us. We dug a little bit of a hole but there's a lot of positives for us to look at through this and obviously negatives as well." HIGHLIGHTS Taryn Ohlmiller (Islip, N.Y.) and Nicole Barretta (Exton, Pa.) led the scoring charge for Stony Brook with each recording a hat trick. Ohlmiller also added in three assists for a team-high six points. Ally Kennedy (North Babylon, N.Y.) had a pair of goals herself and was joined by Siobhan Rafferty (Long Beach, N.Y.), Keri McCarthy (Hauppauge, N.Y.), Sabrina Tabasso (Lower Merion, Pa.) and Sara Moeller (Phoenix, Md.) in the scoring column. All eight of Kennedy's shots came on goal. McCarthy and Kennedy combined for 13 of the team's 15 draw controls. Rachel Williams (Pasadena, Md.) led all players on the field with three caused turnovers. Anna Tesoriero (Huntington, N.Y.) made five saves in goal with four coming in the second half and also picked up three ground balls. NOTES Twenty minutes into the game, Stanford had a 5-1 advantage that was quickly squashed by a 5-0 scoring run by Stony Brook in a six minute span. Stanford tied things up with 1:39 left in the half until a clutch score by Barretta with just three seconds on the clock gave the home team a 7-6 lead heading into the locker room. Both teams exchanged goals to start the second half, but Stanford scored four unanswered to take a two-goal lead with 11:19 left in regulation. Stony Brook wouldn't go away, putting in a pair of goals to knot it all up at 12, but the Cardinal notched the final three scores of the day to take the 15-12 decision. Ohlmiller and Kennedy have scored in all four games so far this year. Statistically, things were pretty even between both squads with Stony Brook and Stanford both taking 28 shots and picking up 21 ground balls. The Seawolves had a slight advantage in draw controls, 15-13. The loss snaps the Seawolves' 33-game home win streak that began back on Mar. 8, 2016 in a 13-7 victory over Yale. NEXT UP The team hits the road this weekend, traveling to take on reigning Ivy League champs Princeton. Action is set to get underway at 1 p.m.
