Sophomore Alyssa Parrella tallied a career-high nine points on six goals and three assists to lead the Hofstra Women's Lacrosse team to a convincing 17-7 win over New Hampshire on Thursday evening at James M. Shuart Stadium. The nine points by Parrella are the most by a Pride player since Brittain Altomare had nine (4G, 5A) against Quinnipiac on March 8, 2015. The total bested Parrella's previous high of eight points against Fairfield last February. Freshman Katie Whelan joined the scoring party as she tied her career-high with five goals. The win was Hofstra's third straight and improves the Pride's record to 6-4 this season. New Hampshire slipped to 3-6. The Pride scored the game's first three goals as junior Jenna Budd opened the scoring and was joined by Parrella and senior Carlee Ancona in the first nine minutes. Hofstra would push the advantage to 5-1 as Parrella scored her second of the game and then Whelan tallied her first of the contest with 13:54 showing on the clock. The lead would be three at the half as New Hampshire native and senior Drew Shapiro scored with 6:41 left before intermission. Holding on to a narrow three-goal lead at halftime, Hofstra was on fire to start the second stanza as the Pride scored the first three goals of the half to make it 9-3 following a tally from Whelan with 24:53 left in regulation. New Hampshire would close the gap to five, 11-6, as Rebecca Sennott and Carly Wooters scored back-to-back goals, but Hofstra put to rest any thoughts of a New Hampshire comeback. Budd would start a 5-0 Pride scoring run midway though the second half that pushed the lead to 10 goals, 16-6, after two straight Parrella goals. Whelan would notch the Pride's final goal of the game off a feed from Parrella with 5:37 left. Junior Alexa Mattera notched two goals and an assist for Hofstra, which also got a goal and two assists from Shapiro and two goals from Budd. Mattera had a game-high seven draw controls, while sophomore Darcie Smith posted four ground balls in the game. Junior Maddie Fields made 10 saves in net to earn her sixth win of the season. Sennott had three points on two goals and an assist for the Wildcats, while Catherine Sexton and Elizabeth Blanding each had a goal and an assist. Hofstra returns to action next Friday, April 6, when it opens Colonial Athletic Association play at 5 p.m. against Elon. That game will air on the Lax Sports Network. NOTES - Hofstra leads the all-time series with New Hampshire, 12-8. - Whelan's previously had five goals against Maryland on March 3. - During the Pride's current three-game win streak Hofstra has outscored its opponents, 49-18. - With her 10 saves, Fields is now one save shy of 10th place all-time at Hofstra with 245 saves. Mary Cuddihy (2007-10) is 10th with 246 saves. Fields has five games this season with at least 10 saves.
