Senior Areta Buness, junior Mikaela Watson and sophomore Ali Baiocco each had a hat trick to lead No. 21 Stanford lacrosse to a 19-10 win over UC Davis on Sunday afternoon at Cagan Stadium. Stanford (2-1) had 12 different goal scorers, including the first career tallies for Alex Tsai, Caitlin Chicoski and Annika Begley. Seven different Cardinal had an assist, including one from Baiocco, who finished with a team-high four points. Sophomore goalkeeper Trudie Grattan made five saves and allowed just four goals in the first 30 minutes. Freshman Julia Cooper had a pair of saves in the second half as well as a team-high four ground balls, where Stanford held a slight 18-17 edge for the game. UC Davis (2-4) scored first, but Stanford, which out-shot the visitors, 31-23, responded with four straight goals and eight of the next nine. Julia Persche made it 3-1 at the 22:59 mark, and within the next 10 minutes, Stanford led 8-2 after Chicoski made a nice move at the 8-meter, found space and the back of the net. Emma Knaus, Katherine Gjertsen and Galen Lew capped the scoring in the first half for a 14-4 lead at the break. Gjertsen assisted Tsai for the largest lead of the day, 17-5, with 13:42 to go. Begley scored with 10 seconds left to give Stanford the nine-goal victory. Junior Hannah Dudley had a team-high two caused turnovers as Stanford forced 12 as a team. The Cardinal also held a 20-10 advantage in draw controls as senior Julia Massaro led Stanford with eight, senior Genesis Lucero had five and Begley had three. Next up, its the first road trip of the year as the Cardinal gets set to travel East to take on Albany (March 1) and Stony Brook (March 3). After that, Stanford does not leave the Bay Area for another three weeks.
