TEMPE, Ariz. – The Arizona State Lacrosse team suffered a 15-4 defeat at the hands of No. 19 Stanford on Saturday afternoon back at Sun Devil Soccer/Lacrosse Stadium. Already playing their third Top-25 team of the season, the Sun Devils kept within striking distance for a majority of the contest. A 5-0 second-half Stanford run put some separation between the two sides as the Cardinal remained undefeated (4-0) on the road. Goalkeeper Berkeley Bonneau continues to impress, finishing with ten saves which represents her fifth consecutive double-digit save performance and sixth overall on the season. The Pac-12's leader in save percentage came through for the Sun Devils with one acrobatic save after another, limiting the high-powered Cardinal offense to only six first half goals, one of which came while the Sun Devils were a man down. Offensively, Arizona State showed flashes of the team that scored a season-high 18 goals in last Friday's victory over Oregon. Four different individuals were responsible for the four goals, with the Maroon and Gold executing the game plan on those opportunities. "Just about all of our four goals came from cutting hard and putting pressure on the defense," Coach Martinez Connor remarked. "That was part of our game plan today, we just didn't execute it enough." Freshman defender Mallory Martel showed that good things happen when playing aggressively on offense, scoring her first goal of her collegiate career off a deflection to tie the game at one early in the first half. The Sun Devils positioning paid off, as several players occupied space in the crease, making it difficult for the Cardinal goalkeeper to track the ball. Shortly thereafter, Arizona State took a 2-1 lead with 16:35 left thanks to a goal from freshman phenom Paige McGlothlin. McGlothlin found an opening and Kerri Clayton delivered a perfect pass, allowing McGlothlin to easily transition to her shot that found the back of the net. The Cardinal would control the rest of the first half, but could not separate themselves from a determined Arizona State side, entering halftime with a 6-2 lead. A quick response to a Stanford goal was offered by Kate Dougherty, who joined the double-digit goal club with her 10th goal of the campaign less than two minutes into the second half. The goal was off a dish from Emily Glagolev, who picked up her team-leading 12th assist of the season. Dougherty becomes the third Sun Devil to reach the double-digit goal plateau in 2019. A pair of Stanford goals pushed the lead to 9-3, forcing Coach Martinez Connor to call a timeout. The adjustments made in the timeout were apparent, as a few minutes later the Sun Devil defense turned up the intensity. Arizona State managed to force the Cardinal into a shot clock violation on three consecutive possessions, as Stanford looked flustered by the schematic improvement. "I was proud of our effort defensively during those sequences," Coach Martinez Connor remarked. "We are capable of shutting down talented opposing attacks if we play with more consistency." Three more Stanford goals extended the lead to 12-3 with 7:40 left in the game. Showing no quit, the Sun Devils continued to fight on every possession. A well-executed attack developed when Olivia Hood fed Kerri Clayton on the run, leading to Clayton's team-leading 15th goal of the season. The assist was the first of Hood's collegiate career. Arizona State continued to compete until the final whistle as the Cardinal slowed down the pace, cruising to a 15-4 victory in Tempe. A great turnout by Sun Devil fans resulted in an announced season-high attendance of 315. Arizona State has a quick turnaround as they will appear on the Pac-12 Network for the second time this season when they take on California on Monday at 4 p.m. The afternoon matchup at Sun Devil Soccer/Lacrosse Stadium will serve as our Pink Game, as the program shows it's support for Breast Cancer awareness and research efforts. A season ago, ASU made history against this same Golden Bears side. Emily Glagolev scored an overtime goal as the program earned its first-ever victory over a Pac-12 opponent in Berkeley last season.
