BOULDER – The 22nd-ranked University of Colorado lacrosse team fell 13-12 in overtime to No. 18 Stanford on Friday, as the Cardinal found the final goal in a back and forth contest. The Buffs move to 7-6 on the season and 6-2 in the Pac-12, while the Cardinal move to 10-4 on the season and 5-3 in conference play. WHAT HAPPENED: Stanford opened the scoring less than a minute into the game and extended their lead to 2-0 on a free-position attempt seconds after Anna Collawn was sent to the penalty box. Samantha Nemirov answered back with a pair of quick goals, drawing the score to 2-2 at the 21:38 mark of the first half. The Cardinal scored the game's next two goals. It seemed as though Stanford had recaptured the momentum, drawing a yellow card on a free-position goal that gave them a two-goal lead and an advantage. A shorthanded Colorado defense held strong for a full 90 seconds however, forcing a shot clock violation. A pair of goals from Miranda Stinson brought the score back to 4-4 with 9:33 remaining in the first half, but Stanford responded with two quick scores of their own, extending the lead back to 6-4. Then, goals from Nemirov and Sadie Grozier just 14 seconds apart evened the score heading into halftime. Grozier opened the scoring early in the second half, giving the Buffs their first lead of the day at 7-6. CU continued building momentum after Stanford tied the game 7-7. Charlie Rudy scored back-to-back goals, and Chloe Willard and Sophie Castillo chipped in one goal-a-piece, stretching the Buffs' lead to 11-7 with 10:26 remaining in the game. Stanford responded to the Buffs run with one of their own, scoring the game's next five goals to retake the lead with 3:32 remaining in the game. With an 12-11 lead, the Cardinal controlled the ensuing draw and created several scoring chances, but CU's defense held strong for nearly two minutes before reclaiming possession with 1:35 to play. With just under a minute remaining in the game, Stinson capitalized on a free-position attempt, leveling the score at 12-12 and sending the game into overtime. Stinson controlled the opening draw of the overtime period, but the Buffs failed to generate a scoring chance on the offensive end. After regaining possession, Stanford scored the game-winning goal 2:55 into overtime. KEY STATISTIC: It was an evenly-matched contest statistically, with CU holding the advantage in ground balls (13-12), Stanford holding a narrow advantage in shots (30-24) and shots (24-20), and both teams committing 15 turnovers. Stanford converted 6-of-9 free-position attempts to CU's 2-of-7. In a game where with a few minutes left to go, probably a little over ten minutes we had a four-goal lead. We know Stanford fights back, I've watched them enough to know they don't stop fighting and they come back so that's not a surprise. The surprise on our end is not finishing plays and losing some confidence. We got to do a better job and our players have to do a better job at taking ownership over that as well." On freshman stepping up during the second half run "It's great for us. I think in general the more people we have stepping up the more dynamic we are and the harder we are to stop. So, to see some players step up and make plays is a big positive for us but at the end of the day, we didn't make enough." On Samantha Nemirov's play "Samantha has been playing well, I think she's competitive, focused and she understands the opportunities in our offense. As a team, we did a good job of understanding those opportunities especially early on. We capitalized on some early and she played well." On the importance of the next two games "This game was huge for us so loosing was unfortunate. Now the only thing we are worried about is Sunday. We know how important that game is and there is going to be no distractions. We got to focus on taking care of business and coming out harder than we came out today. We are fighting for positioning in the Pac-12 every team is great, and every team is a game that we need to win. For us right now our backs are against the wall and we are used to being in that position, we got to respond." On lessons learned from today "I think the lessons are that every play counts. Every minute and second counts that we are out there. We had opportunities and we didn't capitalize, we made stops defensively and we gave them second chances. Against a good team that's 5-2, you can't give them second chances. We didn't do a good job at that defensively overall and we didn't do a good job on capitalizing on the opportunities we had down the stretch. At the end of the day, you got to make plays and we didn't make enough plays to win and Stanford did."
