he Marquette University women’s lacrosse team dropped its 2018 season opener at No. 22 Johns Hopkins, 14-7, on Friday.
After cutting the Johns Hopkins lead to 8-6 with 18:56 left in the game, the nationally-ranked ‘Jays used a six-goal run to retake control on the way to a season-opening win.
Junior Grace Gabriel got the Golden Eagles on the board first, netting a free position tally in the first minute of the game. But JHU would answer quickly, scoring just 20 seconds later to start a 6-0 run that would eventually build it a commanding 8-2 edge.
Lindsey Willcocks and Allison Lane scored in the final 37 second of the first half to cut the halftime deficit to 8-4 and build some much-needed momentum heading into halftime. Cate Soccodato then scored Marquette’s first goal of the second half before Charlotte McGuire added her second of the game to make it 8-6.
However, in succession, Johns Hopkins’ Nicole DeMase, Miranda Ibello and Shannon Fitzgerald each collected their third goals of the game and doubled up the Golden Eagles, 12-6.
An all-around effort from Lane, who along with her goal, added seven draw controls, three ground balls and three caused turnovers. Marquette won the draw battle, 12-8, but struggled to keep possession to the tune of 18 turnovers as compared to just 13 for Hopkins.
JHU outshot MU, 37-26, and not even a game-best 13 saves from Julianna Horning were enough to overcome a strong Bluejays squad.
