The Drexel women's lacrosse team ran out of gas in its season opener on Wednesday at Johns Hopkins, falling 14-10 after hanging with the Blue Jays throughout the rainy afternoon at Homewood Field. Drexel got solid contributions from a young team with five players making their first collegiate starts, but the Blue Jays put together a 9-2 run in the second half that proved decisive. Lucy Schneidereith and Courtney Dietzel each posted hat tricks in the loss, the first of their careers. For Schneidereith, the goals were her first after a scoreless rookie season in 2017. Karson Harris, seeing her first collegiate action, scored two early goals and added an assist along with two caused turnovers and three ground balls in an impressive debut. Colleen Grady had a goal, an assist and a caused turnover in her Drexel debut. Maggie Stetson scored once to go along with four draw controls, tops on the team and one better than Dietzel and Rachel Warden. Warden had four ground balls and a caused turnover as well. Caroline Cummings chipped in an assist, the first of her Dragons career. Also making her Drexel debut was Zoe Bennett, who posted nine saves while facing 23 shots in her first action as a collegian. She played the full 60 minutes for Drexel, which only rotated 13 players into the game with Grace Osterdale serving as the lone reserve to see time on Wednesday. After Hopkins got the game's first goal, Drexel responded with a pair of scores by Harris. Her goals came just 1:04 apart midway through the first half and sparked the game into overdrive. There had been just one goal for either side in the first 13:31 of the action, but there would not be a scoreless span of more than 5:13 the rest of the way. Hopkins held a 5-3 lead late in the first half when Dietzel found the back of the net for the first time off a feed from Harris with 4:26 to play. Drexel won the ensuing draw and, after the teams exchanged fruitless possessions, had the ball back with the clock winding down. Just before halftime, Grady took the ball from the right of the Hopkins goal and slung a pass into Schneidereith, who scored from close range with one second on the clock to tie the score at 5-5. The Drexel run carried over into the second half, where Dietzel netted a pair of unassisted goals to open the scoring in the first 4:02 of play and give the Dragons a 7-5 edge, their largest of the afternoon. Johns Hopkins got back to work with three straight goals from Maggie Schneidereith, part of the Schneidereith quadruplets that include Drexel's Jamie and Lucy. She would ultimately net four of the Blue Jays' five consecutive goals as they retook a 10-7 lead. Not content to let her sister steal the show, Lucy Schneidereith responded with two straight goals of her own, the first assisted on by Cummings, to make it a one-goal game with 10:41 to play. It stayed that way for nearly two-and-a-half minutes before Miranda Ibello netted a man-down goal for the Blue Jays to give them some cushion and spark a decisive 4-0 spurt. Stetson would score for Drexel with 41 seconds remaining to end that run, but it was too late for a final push. Drexel will get back in action on Sunday at noon when the Dragons search for their first victory of the season in their home debut. That game, against Iona, will get underway at Vidas Field at noon.
