The 23rd-ranked Loyola University Maryland women's lacrosse team couldn't overcome No. 22 Johns Hopkins in its season opener Wednesday night, as the Greyhounds fell to their Charles Street rival 14-11 at Homewood Field. Senior Hannah Savage and junior Hannah Powers shared game-high honors of four points each, with Powers dishing out four assists and Savage turning in her first hat trick of the season to go with one assist. Freshman Livy Rosenzweig finished her collegiate debut with one goal and two assists, while classmate Sam Fiedler and junior Frankie Kamely added two goals each. Freshmen Bridget Ballard and Elli Kluegel both netted their first career goals in the game, while junior Taylor VanThof rounded out the scoring for Loyola (0-1) with one goal. In goal, junior Kady Glynn posted the eighth double-digit save performance of her career, finishing with 13 saves, including 12 in the first half. Nicole DeMase, Miranda Ibello and Emily Kenul each netted three goals apiece for Johns Hopkins (3-0). Despite winning four of the first five draw controls, Loyola's offense struggled to take care of the ball, allowing the Blue Jays to build a 4-0 lead by the 18:41 mark. Senior Katrina Geiger found Savage wide open in front of the goal at the 13:43 mark to halt Johns Hopkins' streak, but the Blue Jays tacked on two more scores by the 9:34 mark to pull ahead 6-1. Rosenzweig then assisted Fiedler at 7:24 before giving up a free position attempt to Kamely to score as time expired in the half, sending the Greyhounds into the break with a three-goal deficit, 6-3. Powers sparked a second-half comeback, dishing out assists on Loyola's first four goals of the period, to Kluegel, Kamely, VanThof and Savage, respectively, to pull the Greyhounds within one, 8-7, with 21:43 to play. The Blue Jays responded with a three-goal run though before Ballard was able to halt the streak with a goal from Savage at the 15:46 mark. Hopkins struck again, twice, before Ballard returned the assist to Savage. Fiedler then picked up a loose ball on the crease and stuck it into the back of the net, and Filippelli assisted Rosenzweig to bring Loyola within two, 13-11, with 2:44 to play. That would be as close as the Greyhounds would get though, as the Blue Jays closed out the scoring in the game to account for the 14-11 final score. Defensively, VanThof collected three ground balls, while junior Madison Fahey had two caused turnovers. VanThof also earned eight draw controls. Loyola will look to rebound on Sunday when it heads to No. 3 Florida for a noon draw.
